U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) says that special counsel Jack Smith's "days are numbered."
Higgins said as much during a recent appearance on Newsmax's The Chris Salcedo Show.
Smith, of course, is the special counsel who is prosecuting former President Donald Trump on behalf of the administration of President Joe Biden.
In this capacity, Smith has brought two criminal cases against Trump: one in Washington, D.C., in which Smith has alleged that Trump illegally interfered in the 2020 presidential election, and one in Florida, in which Smith has alleged that Trump mishandled classified documents when he left the White House.
During his appearance on Newsmax, Higgins specifically was responding to the fact that Smith, as part of his investigation, filed a search warrant in order to get access to Trump's X accounts and posts. There will be more on this later.
"So, let me say, regarding Jack Smith and his request for another list of American citizens under some alleged legitimate investigative effort, I consider it a badge of honor to be on another one of Jack Smith’s lists," Higgins said.
It was at this point that Higgins said that Smith's "days are numbered."
"So, I’ll just say that his days are numbered, and American patriots are not going to stand idly by, good sir, and allow our republic to dissolve," Higgins said.
He added, "We are prepared to fight legally and peacefully and within the parameters of the Constitution with every ounce of our might and focus."
New reporting indicates that Smith's X search warrant extended farther than previously thought.
The Washington Examiner quotes the warrant ask seeking:
. . . all information from . . . the [Trump] account, including all lists of Twitter users who have favorited or retweeted tweets posted by the account, as well as all tweets that include the username associated with the account (i.e. "mentions" or "replies").
The Examiner explains, "News outlets in mid-August largely focused on the then-revelation that the warrant existed and the information it sought from Trump himself but less on how Trump's followers may also have been caught in the scope of Smith's investigation."
This is why Smith's search warrant is back in the news. Higgins was commenting on the fact that his X account was among those encompassed by Smith's search warrant.
The idea that the government can search an individual's social media account just be the individual liked or retweeted a post by a Trump is troubling, to say the least.
