House Dems are desperately trying to stop Trump 2024

Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) is now trying to use the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to make a last-ditch attempt to stop former President Donald Trump from ever again holding public office.

This information was first reported by Politico’s Nicholas Wu.

The details

Fox News reports further information about the letter that Cicilline sent to his fellow House Democrats on Tuesday.

Cicilline, according to Fox, is specifically trying to use Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

This is the section that states that no person is allowed to hold office who has “engaged in [an] insurrection” against the U.S. after having previously pledged, officially, to support the Constitution.

In other words, it’s the same old, same old: Cicilline is trying to claim that Trump incited an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, and that, therefore, Trump ought not to be allowed to ever hold office again.

Cicilline wrote:

This language in our Constitution clearly intended to bar insurrectionists from holding high office in the United States. Given the proof – demonstrated through the January 6th Committee Hearings, the 2021 impeachment trial, and other reporting – that Donald Trump engaged in insurrection on Jan. 6 with the intention of overturning the lawful 2020 election results, I have drafted legislation that would prevent Donald Trump from holding public office again under the 14th Amendment.

What now?

Cicilline clearly is trying to squeeze this legislation in before the next Congress, when the Republicans will have control of the House.

As of yet, it remains unclear whether House Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), will vote on the measure. It remains unclear, at this point, what kind of support the bill has.

Trump, however, is unphased. Later in the day on Tuesday, he proceeded to officially announce his 2024 bid for the U.S. presidency.

“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said.
