Top Ukrainian official says special ‘hit squad’ sent to assassinate Zelensky has been ‘eliminated’

A seemingly obvious goal of the Russian invasion of Ukraine is to topple the central government in Kyiv, including taking out Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in order to install a puppet regime with a friendlier disposition toward Moscow.

Coinciding with that goal were reports that elite “hit squads” were deployed to try and assassinate Zelensky, but according to a top Ukrainian official, those assassin squads were discovered and “neutralized” before completing their mission, the New York Post reported.

Ironically enough, the Ukrainian official further asserted that Kyiv had been secretly tipped about the supposed death squads by members of Russia’s intelligence and security services who are quietly opposed to the invasion launched by their leader, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Chechen “hit squad” sent to assassinate Zelensky

The purported hit squad sent to assassinate Zelensky is an elite unit of Chechen fighters under the command of the Putin-allied leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, who has publicly acknowledged previously that his troops are fighting in Ukraine and has called for the overthrow of the Kyiv government.

Yet, according to the Ukrainian media outlet New Voice, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council’s Secretary Oleksiy Danilov announced Tuesday on local TV that Kadyrov’s special hit squad had been “eliminated” thanks to “critical intelligence” provided by members of Russia’s FSB.

That followed reports from earlier in the day that Ukrainian forces had successfully repelled an advance toward the northwest outskirts of Kyiv by a Chechen mechanized brigade.

Relatedly, Kadyrov also reportedly publicly acknowledged Tuesday that some of his forces had suffered losses due to Ukrainian resistance.

Threat from Kadyrov’s Chechen unit “eliminated”

According to the U.K.’s Mirror, Sec. Danilov explained during the televised address that “We are already aware of the special operation that was to be carried out by Kadyrov forces unit.”

“We received the information from representatives of Russia’s Federal Security Service who do not want to take part in this bloody war,” he continued. “The Kadyrov forces unit, which came to kill our President, was eliminated.”

The official went on to say that Kadyrov’s elite hit squad had been divided into two units, the first of which had been engaged and defeated near the town of Hostomel northwest of Kyiv, the second of which was being closely monitored and tracked.

Russian mercenary group also reportedly seeking to kill Zelensky

Unfortunately, the reported success of the Ukrainians in stopping the Chechen hit squad doesn’t mean Zelensky is out of danger yet, as both the Mirror and the Post reported on the alleged presence of a second armed group in Ukraine intent on assassinating that nation’s president.

That group is an elite unit of Russian mercenaries known as the Wagner Group who have gained a fearsome reputation for ruthlessness in Syria and Africa and, according to the Mirror, have been promised a hefty financial bonus if they are able to quickly “decapitate” the Zelensky regime.
