The recent release of thousands of emails two and from Dr. Anthony Fauci has sparked criticism over apparently contradictory statements and evolving opinions throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, a number of prominent Republicans — including U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) — are calling for Fauci’s resignation, Breitbart reported.
“The time has come”
The Missouri Republican wants to see the long-serving director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases resign or be fired and is demanding a more thorough investigation into the origins of the virus.
“Anthony Fauci’s recently released emails and investigative reporting about [COVID-19] origins are shocking,” Hawley tweeted this week. “The time has come for Fauci to resign and for a full congressional investigation into the origins of [COVID-19] — and into any and all efforts to prevent a full accounting.”
He added that the American people have a right “to know if persons within the US govt tried to stop a full investigation” into the pandemic’s roots.
“And Congress must also find out to what extent Fauci’s NIAID was involved in financing research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Hawley added.
The Chinese facility was the source of early speculation, but in recent weeks experts have increasingly begun to consider the possibility that COVID-19 had been engineered in the lab and released to the public.
Mounting evidence stokes opprobrium
Although Fauci had faced mounting criticism over the past several months, the release of emails obtained by BuzzFeed News through a Freedom of Information Act request added to the backlash.
In the messages, Fauci and his associates, colleagues, friends, and even a few celebrities discussed information on a variety of topics that differed from the message he delivered to the public.
Among the notable issues was the efficacy of masks and lockdowns and the origin of COVID-19
The Wuhan Institute of Virology has increasingly been cited as a possible site of the pandemic’s outbreak despite such theories having been widely dismissed in the early days of the public health crisis.
Hawley referenced these revelations in reaching the conclusion that Fauci should be ousted from his influential position as a medical adviser and frequently interviewed media expert.
