One county Democratic Party official’s days in the role may be numbered.
According to The Washington Times, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is calling on Gary O’Connor to resign from his role as chair of the Lamar County Democratic Party over what the Republican called a “hateful” and “disgusting” remark from O’Connor about U.S. Sen Tim Scott (R-SC).
Scott, the sole Black Republican in the U.S. Senate, gave his party’s response last week to President Joe Biden’s first formal address to Congress. For that performance, Scott is being targeted by Democrats — including one many have said clearly crossed the line.
Writing in a Facebook post, O’Connor used a term to refer to Scott that Abbott later said was “completely unacceptable.”
“I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear that he is little more than an oreo with no real principles,” O’Connor wrote. His post included a link to a Washington Post report entitled: “What the back-and-forth over America being a ‘racist country’ is actually about.”
The Washington Times reports: “The ‘oreo’ smear refers to a Black person who is seen as ‘Black on the outside, White on the inside,’ according to the Urban Dictionary.”
Abbott’s response to O’Connor’s remark came in the form of a tweet on Saturday. “This is disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable,” the governor wrote. “O’Connor must apologize to [Sen. Scott] & step down immediately,” he wrote. Abbott also called on the Texas Democratic Party to censure the county chair.
This is disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable.

Thus far, The Washington Times reports that none of this has happened. In fact, O’Connor hasn’t even commented on the matter, let alone apologized.
He is, however, reported to have deleted the Facebook post calling Scott the offensive term. Unfortunately for him, the damage was already done.
According to Fox News, U.S. Rep Pat Fallon (R-TX) is echoing Abbott’s calls for a prompt resignation.
“Gary O’Connor’s comment against Senator Tim Scott is abhorrent, insulting, and unforgivable. Both he and the entire Lamar County Democratic Party should be ashamed of this racist behavior,” the congressman told Fox. “This kind of behavior is not tolerable in Texas, the United States, or any political party.”
