‘Harry Potter’ star Robbie Coltrane dies at 72

Fox News reports that Robbie Coltrane, the actor most known for playing Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, has died at the age of 72.

Coltrane’s passing has been confirmed by a number of individuals. But, not a lot has been revealed about his cause of death.

All that is known is that Coltrane passed away at a hospital – likely Forth Valley Royal Hospital – near his home in Larbert, Scotland.

Deadline reports that Coltrane’s passing comes after a health battle that had been going on for the past two years. But, the outlet did not reveal specifics about that battle, such as what exactly ailed Coltrane.

Remembering Coltrane

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Coltrane would go on to attend the Glasgow Art school.

Coltrane made his acting debut at the age of 12. Early on, he appeared in a number of television series, such as the British television series Cracker, for which he received three BAFTA awards.

Coltrane also had success in films, and the biggest of those successes has to be his portrayal of Hagrid, a half-giant/half-wizard, in the eight Harry Potter movies. Coltrane, though, also landed many other roles, including in the James Bond films The World is Not Enough and GoldenEye.

“A lovely man”

Following the news of his passing, many of Coltrane’s fellow Harry Potter stars have taken to Twitter to offer tributes, condolences, and the like.

Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry Potter, himself, had this to say:

Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set. I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on ‘Prisoner of Azkaban,’ when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.

Rupert Grint, the actor who portrayed Ron Weasley, said, “I’ll never forget the smell of cigars and beard glue — a wonderful combination. No one else on this planet could of played Hagrid, only Robbie.”

Indeed, for anyone who has seen the Harry Potter movies, it is hard to imagine anyone else can play Hagrid as well as Coltrane did.

Coltrane is survived by his sister, his two children, and their mother Rhona Gemmell. And, in addition to his family, he will live on in the memories of all those whom he touched throughout his acting career, especially through the character of Hagrid.
