VP Harris travels to California and Chicago, still no visit to the southern border

It was just weeks ago that President Joe Biden assigned Vice President Kamala Harris with the task of leading “diplomatic efforts” with Mexico and Central American nations to address the “root causes” of northward migration to the U.S.

As noted by Fox NewsHarris still hasn’t gone to the southern border to survey what is occurring firsthand. She has, however, found time to travel across the country within the past few days and weeks.

In fact, Harris traveled to California — not to the border, but to the Bay Area — on Monday and to Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, with nary a mention of the special assignment she was given by the president, according to The Daily Wire.

Visits California and Chicago, not the border

On Monday, Harris joined Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in Oakland to tout the anticipated benefits of Biden’s $2.2 trillion “infrastructure” proposal, a trip that included a tour of a water treatment facility in need of upgrades, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The LA Times noted that Harris didn’t need to travel far for the tour, as she was already in California at her Brentwood home over the Easter weekend. Despite being in California for at least a few days, however, no trip south to the border was made.

Harris also visited the Windy City on Tuesday to tout the administration’s vaccine distribution efforts during a public meeting with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D), Chicago’s ABC affiliate WLS reported.

While in Chicago, the vice president managed to find time to pay a visit to a popular bakery, even as it seems her schedule is too busy to accommodate a trip to the border.

Harris will visit the border “at some point”

Fox News noted that Harris has been rather circumspect about when she will travel to the border, though she had vowed that she “absolutely” would visit the border and survey the situation for herself “at some point.”

That lack of specificity — including laughingly proclaiming “Not today” when asked about her travel plans to the border — has caused some consternation among some in the media and many Americans in general.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that Harris will be heading down to the border any time soon, despite having already visited a border state that she lives in and being personally invited to tour the border by Arizona’s attorney general.

Albeit far short of the promised personal visit, the White House did provide a readout Wednesday of Harris’ phone call with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

During that call, Harris and Obrador reportedly discussed cooperative efforts between the two nations on the border, ongoing efforts to address the “root causes” of migration from Central America, and a commitment to take on smugglers and traffickers moving drugs and people across the border illegally.
