Vice President Kamala Harris found herself in the middle of yet another controversy, this time with regard to her possible exposure to COVID-19 after meeting with several Texas Democrats, some of whom tested positive for the virus.
According to Breitbart, Harris’ spokesperson, Symone Sanders, seemingly intentionally misled the press after originally saying in a statement that Harris didn’t need to be tested after her meeting with the Texas Dems. On Monday, she told the media that Harris was, in fact, tested for the virus following the meeting.
What’s going on?
The revelation that Sanders might have attempted to trick the media over the weekend came as a result of a White House press briefing on Monday, when White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the situation.
Psaki told reporters that Harris had been tested for COVID-19 following the meeting with the infected Texas Democrats, saying, “I think the Vice President’s Office put out that she was tested, and that she did — there was no detection of COVID-19.”
However, on Saturday evening, when the news broke of Harris possibly being exposed to the virus, the vice president’s office quickly issued a statement claiming that Harris didn’t need to be tested, let alone self-quarantine.
“Based on the timeline of these positive tests, it was determined the Vice President and her staff present at the meeting were not at risk of exposure because they were not in close contact with those who tested positive and therefore do not need to be tested or quarantined,” Sanders’ Saturday statement read.
Given the conflicting statements, the vice president’s office was pressed on the developing situation by Politico, which resulted in yet another plot twist.
Turns out, Harris was tested
On Monday, Sanders changed her tune after being questioned about the conflicting information, telling Politico “the vice president is tested regularly as is her staff and that as a part of that regular testing, she was tested this weekend and Covid-19 was not detected.”
Sanders added: “That is not in conflict with the statement we put out Saturday.”
Except, it very much is in conflict with the statement released on Saturday. As Breitbart noted, Sanders clearly mislead the press on Saturday night by downplaying any concerns that Harris could have come into contact with any of the lawmakers who tested positive for the virus.
Adding to the mystery is the White House’s silence on the matter. As of this writing, it’s still unclear whether Harris, who was possibly exposed to COVID-19, met with President Joe Biden on Monday. The vice president has also not been seen publicly for several days, following the potential encounter with the virus, though she did make a “routine” visit — on a Sunday — to Walter Reed hospital, just a day after her possible exposure event.
Obviously, if Harris actually contracted the virus as a result of mingling with unmasked, infected Democrats and word got out, it would be a public relations nightmare for her office and for the Biden-Harris administration. If that is, in fact, the case, we will probably never know.
