Kamala Harris’ ‘Medicare for All’ plan exposes Obama as naive at best, or a liar at worst

When former President Barack Obama pushed to implement the Affordable Care Act in the first term of his presidency, critics warned that Obamacare was an unsustainable half-measure that merely laid the groundwork for a future push to implement a government-run single-payer health care system. Obama and his cronies steadfastly denied that charge for years.

As Democrats gear up for the 2020 presidential election, however, multiple candidates, including Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), now say they support some version of “Medicare for All.” This new plan completely goes against “If you like your healthcare, you can keep it.” And it makes Obama look naive, at best.

Like your plan, keep your plan

Recall Obama’s repeated promise to the American people: “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your plan.”

That turned out to be a big lie — Politifact’s 2013 “Lie of the Year,” in fact. It’s been estimated that at least four million American citizens had their health insurance plans canceled due to Obamacare, whether those people actually liked the plans they had or not.

Perhaps with an eye toward avoiding being caught in a massive lie like that, Harris dispensed with the whole notion of private health insurance plans in expressing her support for Medicare for All.

Eliminate private health insurance plans

During a CNN town hall meeting Monday, moderator Jake Tapper asked Harris to clarify her position on Medicare for All, particularly in light of the fact that she was a co-sponsor on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All bill.

Of the proposed law, Tapper asked, “I believe it will totally eliminate private insurance. So, for people out there who like their insurance, they don’t get to keep it?”

Harris replied, “The idea is that everyone gets access to medical care and you don’t have to go through the process of going through an insurance company, having them give you approval, going through all the paperwork, all of the delay that might require.”

Turning to the crowd, Harris said, “Who of all of us have not had that situation where you have to wait for approval and the doctor says, ‘I don’t know if your insurance company is going to cover this.'”

“Let’s eliminate all of that. Let’s move on,” she added with a dismissive wave of her hand.

In short, Harris is calling for the complete elimination of the private health insurance industry — which means the government would take complete control of our health care.

That’s a far more radical plan than anything ever uttered by Obama — but it’s also exactly what conservatives warned against. This proves that he was either foolishly naive about the implications of starting down that path, or else knew full well what would end up happening and simply lied to the American people in order to sell his socialist vision. Neither option looks good on him.
