Prior to the start of the ongoing partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump invited House and Senate Minority Leaders Nancy Pelosi (CA) and Chuck Schumer (NY) to the White House for a televised and highly publicized debate over border security.
Following that contentious meeting, Pelosi and Schumer took a few moments to address the media outside the White House, at which point Pelosi took a shot at the Fox News reporters — a shot that didn’t go over particularly well with Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner, who had been watching the event from the studio.
Pelosi takes aim at Fox reporters
As she approached the microphones to share her thoughts on the meeting, Pelosi said: “I thought it was unfortunate. I will just say this, you wanted to know if it was more productive behind the scenes.
“I hear some of the reporters saying — well, Fox reporters saying — why do we not want transparency in this discussion,” she continued, in reference to Fox’s questioning of Schumer and Pelosi’s insistence that Trump et al. should debate behind closed doors. “We didn’t want to contradict the president when he was putting forth figures that had no reality to them, no basis in fact,” Pelosi explained.
She went on: “We have to, if we’re going to proceed in all of this, have evidence-based, factual, truthful information about what works and what doesn’t.
“I didn’t want to, in front of those people, say, ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about,'” she added.
Faulkner fires back
A moment later, the video feed ended and shifted back to the Fox News studio, where Outnumbered co-host Harris Faulkner was waiting to fire back at Pelosi for the shot she had just taken at the network’s reporters.
“Well, she called out Fox reporters,” Faulkner lamented. “Not one reporter said, ‘Hey Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, why did you guys shut down the government earlier this year?'”
Faulkner was referring to the brief government shutdown triggered by Democrats in February 2018 over the border security issue, when the Democrats had tried and failed to reach a deal that would purportedly trade border wall funding for amnesty for enrollees in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“If these terms are all going to remain the same, why did they shut down the government?” she asked.
Guest host Jason Chaffetz replied: “Yeah, you can’t also simultaneously claim that you want to maximize transparency and say, ‘Get out of the room, we don’t want to talk anymore.’ I don’t buy that.”
Nancy Pelosi thought she could get away with taking an overt shot at the one network that will ask her tough questions, but while the shot at Fox News reporters may have sat well with Democrats and other liberal media reporters, it certainly didn’t fly with Harris Faulkner in the Fox studio, who used the opportunity to fire a shot right back at the Democrat leader.
Good on her.
