In a surprising turn of events, CNN has caught the Democrat candidate it has been touting in a bold-faced lie.
While speaking to an Iowa audience on Sunday, Harris lied about her support for a policy in San Francisco that required authorities to turn illegal immigrant youths over to ICE.
Caught in a Lie
According to reports, the policy in question required any illegal immigrant youths that were arrested on felony charges be turned over to ICE. It was instituted in 2008 by then-San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom. Naturally, support for such a policy doesn’t sit well with progressive voters.
Asked about the policy, Harris claimed reporting undocumented youth to ICE was an “unintended consequence” of the new policy, which she did not support.
But as CNN reported: “Harris’ comments mischaracterized her history on the policy. Reporting arrested undocumented juveniles to ICE was not an ‘unintended consequence’ of the policy, it was the policy.”
Harris stated the policy, however, had since been changed, reflecting San Francisco’s sanctuary city status. But as CNN pointed out, that change wasn’t her decision — it was made after Newsom was replaced by a new mayor.
Furthermore, when the Board of Supervisors objected to the 2008 policy, Newsom and Harris overrode them.
Spinning the Truth
Harris proved she was a polished politician while giving her answer. She quickly flipped the focus of the question from its actual intent to people not being afraid to report a crime.
“That ended up being an unintended consequence of the policy and I did not support that consequence of that policy,” Harris stated. “And that policy, I believe, has since been changed because it was not the intended purpose of that policy.”
“I’ll say this, and I feel strongly about it, and I always have, which is this, my background is as a prosecutor and I want to know that a person, a victim of a rape or a child molestation, or a vicious violent crime, I want to know that the victim will be able to run in the middle of the street and wave down a police officer and receive protection and security without having to worry about if they do that they will be deported,” Harris said.
If you noticed, she did everything but actually answer the question that was asked of her.
She will no doubt continue to do that is as the campaign stretches on, so it is going to be up to actual citizens to call her out on it during town hall events because it is quite clear reporters are not going to ask the proper follow up questions and actually demand that she answer the question asked.
