The highly partisan House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riot has attracted widespread skepticism from many politicians and pundits on the right.
For his part, Fox News Channel personality Sean Hannity recently asserted that the panel must subpoena House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) if its members wish to be taken seriously.
“Confirmed and corroborated by numerous sources”
A number of prominent Republicans have long insisted that the committee is little more than a witch hunt targeting former President Donald Trump and his supporters.
Democrats have an opportunity to address those concerns, Hannity said, by investigating the most powerful member of their party in the House of Representatives.
Evidence uncovered thus far suggests that Pelosi’s inaction ahead of the riot exacerbated the destruction inflicted on Capitol Hill that day.
“We now know, and it has been confirmed and corroborated by numerous sources right here on this show, that Donald Trump authorized up to 20,000 National Guard soldiers to protect the Capitol,” Hannity said.
He went on to note that the then-president made that authorization two days before the riot.
“Everybody knew tensions were running high in the country”
“Now, why would he authorize that?” Hannity asked. “Everybody knew a massive demonstration was planned. Everybody knew tensions were running high in the country and given what happened over the summer.”
He continued by citing evidence that Trump took precautions ahead of Jan. 6 that were meant to mitigate any possible damage or injury caused by protesters — but Pelosi sought to block those measures.
“So the question tonight is why?” Hannity added. “Why? Why not approve the extra security that the president allocated for? Why choose to leave lawmakers vulnerable with such a massive crowd that they knew would be going to the Capitol?”
Given the perception that Pelosi is “off-limits” to the committee members, Hannity explained that a growing number of skeptics believe it could be because Pelosi is culpable for paving the way for the riot.
If Republicans gain control of the House as current projections indicate is likely, GOP lawmakers are likely to actively pursue the truth regarding Pelosi’s actions ahead of the riot.
