Joe Biden has emerged as the top candidate among Democrats vying for the party’s nomination for the White House in 2020, but in doing so, the former vice president has had to flip-flop on his once long-held positions on a number of important issues.
Fox News host Sean Hannity suggested on Thursday that Biden’s flip-flops have been part of an effort to appeal to the more radical left-leaning base of the party and win over its nominal figurehead — the “real” House speaker: New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D).
Hannity noted that Biden has been catching a lot of flak from the left recently about his allegedly racially insensitive past. The former VP most recently fell under fire for comments he made about being willing to work with staunch segregationists — who were Democrats, by the way.
Biden has also received criticism for his past opposition of school integration, his prior support for the harsh crime bill of the 1990s, and his myriad of excuses for outspoken racists of the past, who he said were merely products of their time period. He was also criticized for his treatment of Clarence Thomas accuser Anita Hill during the now-Supreme Court justice’s confirmation hearings.
Biden has resisted demands that he apologize for such things and maintained that he isn’t racist at all. But given how Biden has flip-flopped on other things, it’s likely only matter of time before he changes his mind on this as well.
Pandering to AOC
Indeed, even “Biden’s advisors are actually now even publicly begging him, stop talking about your political past because it is a massive liability,” according to Hannity.
“He has no core ideas, no solutions, eight years of failure,” the Fox host said. “Willing to say and do everything to try to appease the radical Democrat socialist party, but is anyone buying it. Remember his Anita hill apology tour, the flip-flopping on the Hyde Amendment? He held that position for 40 years, having to pander to the real speaker of the house, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.”
Hannity’s jab at Pelosi comes as the California Democrat has struggled to maintain her image as a strong leader amid dissension in her camp, led in part by AOC herself.
Hannity went on to say that Biden has adopted “the crazy new green deal climate change nonsense” before alleging that the former VP is “averaging about a flip-flop a week, making the campaign spin and spin in a million different directions.”
Biden, Pelosi slipping
Joe Biden is indeed a flip-flopper — a career politician who lacks a spine or hard and firm stance on any major issue, instead wavering to whatever position he thinks will earn him the support of his party’s base.
Unfortunately for Biden, his party’s base at this moment is led by the outspoken activist left — represented by Ocasio-Cortez and her ilk, who have effectively silenced more moderate leftists like him and Pelosi.
And just like Biden faces loss in the upcoming Democrat primaries, if Nancy Pelosi is unable to effectively grapple with the increasingly radical base of her own party, she faces the very real threat of actually being replaced by one of those radicals in the not-so-distant future.
