Hakeem Jeffries calls on Congress to get the 'MAGA extremists on the Supreme Court under control'

 May 25, 2024

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is calling for a “legislative effort” to rein in the “MAGA extremists” on the Supreme Court, Breitbart reported. The New York Democrat said this on Friday’s Deadline on MSNBC.

For decades, the left-leaning court was not problematic for the Democrats who were getting their way. However, they have changed their tune since the balance of the court is now majority right-leaning.

"This is part of the challenge that we confront with the runaway Supreme Court that appears to want to conduct itself as if the Judiciary is above the law. For years, members of Congress in both the House and the Senate have indicated that it’s time for the Supreme Court to have an ethical code of conduct that is enforceable," Jeffries told host Katie Tur.

Ethics Concerns

Jeffries has a new zeal for ethics oversight at the Supreme Court. "Last year, Chief Justice Roberts did implement a code of conduct, but it appears to be voluntary and is being ignored," Jeffries claimed.

"And so, as a result of that, the first opportunity that we have in the Congress, I believe we need to have a real conversation about a legislative effort to implement an ethical code of conduct on the Supreme Court that is enforceable. They are the only branch of government currently that can operate with impunity," the House Minority Leader said.

In the past, Democrats were just fine with these justices who had lifetime appointments doing their bidding. Now that they no longer have control, Jeffries is calling on Congress to do something about what he considers a rogue court.

"Congress has an ethical code of conduct enforceable under law. The executive branch has an ethical code of conduct enforceable under law. We’ve got to get the MAGA extremists on the Supreme Court under control," Jeffries claimed.

Justice Samuel Alito is the most recent justice to come under additional scrutiny after photos resurfaced of his house flying an upside-down American flag, Reuters reported. The issue is the timing of the symbol, as it came just after a riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The Jan. 6 Question

The Supreme Court is in the process of hearing two of former President Donald Trump's cases that involve the riot, and Jeffries believes the flying of the flag as a symbol of distress disqualifies Alito. "I do not see any non-nefarious or innocent explanation," Jeffries claimed.

"And if there is one, we haven't heard it from Supreme Court Justice Alito. It's not being forthcoming," he added.

Alito had explained the flag in question was his wife's doing. Jeffries said this response from Alito was only to "throw his wife under the bus" while defending his support of the "Insurrectionist-in-Chief Donald Trump."

Jeffries believes the solution is for Congress to intervene. "Part of the challenge that we confront at this moment is that the extreme MAGA Republican majority in the House of Representatives has zero interest in exercising any oversight authority over the out-of-control members of the Supreme Court, which is one of the things that will be before the American people on the ballot in November," he said.

Democrats like Jeffries didn't care when there was a left-leaning activist Supreme Court for decades. Now that they're no longer getting their way, the leftists are throwing a fit and calling for Democrats to seize control.
