Conservative legal group demands records in failed Louisiana natural gas deal involving Biden family and Chinese business associates

 December 13, 2023

Through the House Republican investigation of alleged Biden family influence-peddling, evidence has been uncovered of a questionable but unsuccessful proposed deal between Biden family members and Chinese business associates involving Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) in Louisiana.

The America First Legal organization has now filed a public records request with the office of Louisiana's Democratic Gov. Jon Bel Edwards seeking all communications involving Biden family members and associates concerning the proposed deal, according to the Daily Caller.

That request stems from evidence and allegations that James Biden, the brother of President Joe Biden, interceded on behalf of the president's son, Hunter Biden, and their Chinese business associates with the Louisiana governor's office to sell the deal, obtain the necessary permits, and "fast-track" the proposed LNG project.

James Biden's involvement in the Monkey Island LNG port deal

The Daily Caller reported that the Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee recently publicized numerous documents turned over by IRS whistleblowers from the years-long federal investigation of Hunter Biden, including a memo that detailed a voluntary interview with his uncle James Biden.

Mentioned in that interview was a failed 2017 proposed deal known as Monkey Island that involved an island of the same name off the coast of Louisiana that Hunter Biden and his associates at the Chinese energy infrastructure firm CEFC hoped to develop into a port for the loading and offloading of LNG shipments through a joint investment venture known as Hudson West III.

"James B recalled talking with appropriate people in the governor’s office regarding the permits and recalled that it was supposed to be on a fast track," the memo stated.

The memo further shared the president's brother's recollection that despite "there being months and months of negotiations regarding Monkey Island," the deal ultimately fell through as the Chinese associates backed out with no explanation, though the timing did coincide with CEFC and its leadership experiencing legal issues back home in China.

Legal group demands governor produce all communications about failed LNG port deal

Following the release of that memo and in light of questions raised about the proposed Monkey Island LNG port deal involving the Biden family and Chinese business associates linked to the communist Chinese government and military, America First Legal sent a records request letter to the office of Louisiana Gov. Edwards.

Referencing the House GOP investigations, the letter stated, "The evidence shows that, even after Joe Biden left the White House in 2017, members of the Biden family contacted individuals in the Louisiana Governor’s Office in furtherance of the Monkey Island LNG deal on behalf of Chinese nationals backed by the Chinese Communist Party."

The letter went on to detail the formation of Hudson West III and other shell companies as well as some of the relevant financial transactions involving the Biden family and their Chinese associates and what little was known about the Monkey Island LNG deal.

"While the Monkey Island LNG deal ultimately fell through, the evidence shows that members of the Biden family communicated with your office on behalf of foreign business interests, even after Joe Biden left the White House in 2017," the letter said. "Accordingly, disclosure about the Biden family, their associates, and their Chinese business partners’ contacts with your office is needed to inform the public about this most pressing issue."

As such, America First Legal asked the governor's office to all records of any communications to or from the governor's office and President Biden -- including his known aliases -- Hunter Biden, James Biden, their American and Chinese associates, the various shell companies involved in the deal, and certain relevant keywords between August 2017 and March 2018.

Exposing the Biden family's apparent influence-peddling

In a press release announcing the records request filed with the Louisiana governor's office, America First Legal's vice president and general counsel, Gene Hamilton, issued a statement to explain the purpose of the organization's demands.

"America First Legal’s hard-hitting oversight work has revealed extensive evidence of the Biden Family’s influence peddling and activities in support of their personal enrichment, even when it involved work on behalf of entities closely aligned with the Chinese Communist Party," Hamilton said. "We will continue to expose the publicly available evidence and present it to the American people to ensure accountability."
