Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has been pushing for calling witnesses and extending this impeachment trial from day one.
Influential GOP Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) believes it is because Schumer is terrified that up-and-coming progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is planning to oust Schumer from his long-held Senate seat.
The failed impeachment
Schumer has been pushing for the Senate to do the House’s job since the House passed the articles of impeachment. The New York Democrat knew from the outset that his counterparts in the House failed to do their job.
As such, the only way this impeachment even stood a remote chance to succeed would be if Schumer could extend the trial by calling more witnesses.
Even though it would still more than likely fail, at least Schumer would have been able to boast that he did everything in his power to impeach Donald J. Trump.
Graham believes Schumer did this because he fears Ocasio-Cortez may make a play to take his seat when he comes up for re-election in 2022.
Graham appeared on Fox’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” and stated, “Chuck Schumer is having AOC breathing down his neck in terms of a Democratic primary.” He then added, “Chuck Schumer is scared to death to lose his job to AOC. And that’s why this debacle continued in the Senate.” Watch:
Ocasio-Cortez for Senate?
Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow far-left Democrats have had no problem causing problems within the party. The so-called “Squad,” made up of Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and their supporters, are trying to turn the entire Democrat party into a socialist haven.
They have already started to support “their” Democrats over incumbents in the current election cycle, so it is not a surprise to hear Ocasio-Cortez may try to unseat one of her fellow Democrats in the Senate.
The rumors of this possible coup to remove Schumer started back in June 2019 when Axios ran a report that Ocasio-Cortez was eyeing either Schumer’s seat for a 2022 bid or Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s (D-NY) in 2024.
With Schumer being the Senate Minority Leader, AOC could make a very good case he has failed the people of his party by botching the Senate impeachment trial.
As untrustworthy as Schumer is, though, he is a far cry from the radical Ocasio-Cortez has shown herself to be, and surely she would create considerable headaches for conservatives if she was able to land one of those seats.
