House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) — whose partisan gamesmanship last weekend delayed the passage of a desperately needed economic relief package in response to the coronavirus crisis — had the temerity on Sunday to declare President Donald Trump responsible for people dying from the disease due to his own alleged delays early on in the response effort.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), also on Sunday morning, called the remarks from Pelosi the “most shameful, disgusting statement by any politician in modern history,” Breitbart reported.
Graham blasts Pelosi
Those comments from Sen. Graham came during an appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with host Maria Bartiromo, where the South Carolina Republican discussed various aspects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The conversation eventually shifted to the several days of debate over the Senate’s legislative package that were prompted primarily by Pelosi’s demands, as well as to her claim earlier that morning that President Trump was “fiddling around while people are dying” from the viral disease.
“She’s blaming the president of the United States for people dying because of the way he has lead the country,” Graham said, according to Breitbart. “That’s the most shameful, disgusting statement by any politician in modern history.”
Lays blame at speaker’s feet
Graham went on to note that, in contrast to Pelosi’s doom and gloom perspective, “the best of America” has been on display in response to the new coronavirus, whether in the form of people helping out others in need or grocery stores implementing special hours for seniors to shop, among countless other acts of kindness.
“She’s the first politician to blame another politician for people dying,” Graham said, according to Breitbart.
He went on: “This is the same speaker of the House who held up the bill in the Senate for days because she wanted same-day voting, she wanted carbon neutrality for the airlines, she wanted $75 million for the Endowment for the Humanities and $25 million for the Kennedy Center.
“She is the one that held up the package in the Senate for days to get the Green New Deal put in a recovery package, so it’s the most shameful, disgusting thing I’ve heard yet, and it needs to stop,” the senator concluded.
Bartiromo noted that the Kennedy Center funds, among other things, still ended up in the bill, but Graham said in response that Pelosi, metaphorically speaking, had “put a gun to [senators’] head[s]” in the Senate to force the inclusion of her demands if they wanted the bill passed through the House.
“We took most of the garbage out, but for her to blame this president for causing loss of life after she held up the relief package for days to get a liberal special interest shopping list in the bill is pretty disgusting,” Graham said, according to Fox Business.
Nancy Pelosi’s actions and rhetoric have been “pretty disgusting” indeed, and it would be nice if she could find it within herself to put aside her partisan hatred of the president, if only temporarily, at least until the public health crisis subsides.
