New York’s Democrat governor declares systemic racism a ‘public health emergency’

ABC News reported Thursday that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) had declared racism a “public health emergency” with the signing of a series of new bills aimed at combating “systemic racism and inequitable treatment” in the state.

“For far too long, communities of color in New York have been held back by systemic racism and inequitable treatment,” Hochul said upon signing a legislative package, according to ABC.

“I am proud to sign legislation that addresses this crisis head-on, addressing racism, expanding equity, and improving access for all,” the governor said.

Combating racism

Hochul made the declaration just before Christmas and inked her signature on a number of bills, including S.70-A/A.2230, which, according to Breitbart, “gives law enforcement guidelines for the collection and reporting of demographic data for hate crime victims and alleged perpetrators.”

New York State Assembly Member Karines Reyes (D) said the law “ensures that we collect accurate demographic data of perpetrators and victims to better protect the communities being targeted.”

“Without data, the plight of many will remain invisible,” Reyes said, according to ABC.

Hochul also cemented on the books S.6639-A/A.6896-A., which is specifically designed “to keep a more accurate and relevant public record of Asian-American populations in New York,” Breitbart reported.

What about COVID?

According to Breitbart, the message sent by New York’s governor echoes sentiments shared by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky, who said last April that racism remains a “serious public health threat.”

“What we know is this: racism is a serious public health threat that directly affects the well-being of millions of Americans,” she said, according to Breitbart. “As a result, it affects the health of our entire nation.”

Other jurisdictions have also made similar declarations, with New York City, Chicago, and Richmond, Virginia each asserting last year that racism is a public health crisis.

You’d think they’d be focused on an apparently bigger threat: the pandemic. Thousands of Americans are still testing positive for COVID-19 every day, according to reports, as the omicron variant of the disease rips across the nation.

Maybe Democrat leaders just need something else to fearmonger about now that even many on the left are losing faith in public health officials’ guidance on the coronavirus.
