Retired GOP congressman says Republicans ready to turn on Trump
With Rep. Adam Schiff’s public impeachment hearings now past, some former GOP members of Congress are chiming in about where they would stand if they were still in office.
One such person is former Rep. Charlie Dent, who flipped on the GOP party line and said he believes many Republicans are sick and tired of Trump’s antics and are close to turning on him.
It’s a matter of time
Dent, who is a former congressman for Pennsylvania and retired in 2018, claims he is still in contact with many of his former congressional colleagues.
He stated that he had been told by many of them that they are “absolutely disgusted and exhausted by the President’s behavior.”
He further stated were it not for the strong support Trump has among their base voters, they would have already turned on Trump.
“They resent being put in this position all the time. I think they’d like to step out, but they just can’t because of their base at the moment,” he continued.
In essence, they are just biding their time to pick the right moment to come out against Trump and allow Democrats to impeach Trump.
Not going to happen
If Dent is waiting for Trump’s base to waiver, he has an awfully long wait ahead of him. Trump’s supporters have stuck by him through a barrage of allegations claiming sexual misconduct, collusion, obstruction, and now an impeachment. That being the case, it is tough to imagine them ever leaving the President’s side.
In fact, it seems as though every allegation made only makes the Trump base more resilient and loyal because they simply cannot trust the source of these allegations as being anything other than partisan political motivation.
Trump refuses to bow down to the establishment and his refusal to act the way they want him to has infuriated many on both sides of the aisle.
He often says the first thing that comes to his mind and he simply does not care who he offends in the process. These are the things that frustrate other politicians while at the same time winning him even more favor among his supporters.
So, Mr. Dent, if you are waiting around for Trump’s base to turn on him so you can oust him from office, you have a pretty long wait, because the Trump Train shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
