GOP reps threaten to ‘vacate’ Pelosi’s chair if she does not call House back into session

Multiple House Republicans are calling for President Joe Biden and other senior administration officials to be removed from office in response to a disastrous U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

So far, their efforts have been stymied by the fact that the House is not in session — but some conservative lawmakers are advocating for an effort to remove House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from her leadership position if she does not call members back for a special session.

A bold strategy

Members of the House Freedom Caucus say they will push for a vote to “vacate the chair” if the speaker does not permit them to address their concerns about the current administration.

Of course, the Republicans face pushback from their own side of the aisle as well, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stopping short of endorsing any talk of impeachment, removal, or resignation regarding the president.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) elaborated on the argument being put forward by the House Freedom Caucus.

He criticized Biden as dishonest and incompetent, going on to call for the impeachment and removal of Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Good similarly demanded that Biden, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley resign in disgrace or face impeachment.

Possible pitfalls

“Speaker Pelosi, call us back into session to make this happen or let’s vacate the chair,” Good added.

According to Politico, one of the reasons why McCarthy and other GOP leaders — including some members of the House Freedom Caucus — are not on board with an impeachment effort against Biden lies in the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris and Pelosi represent the next two individuals in line to replace him.

For her part, caucus member Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) proposed a solution during impassioned remarks at Tuesday’s press conference, advocating for multiple impeachments and removals from office either simultaneously or in rapid succession.

“It is time for action. Impeach Biden, impeach Kamala Harris, and throw in the secretary of State if you can get him back from vacation,” she concluded. “Take a vote to vacate the chair to get Nancy Pelosi the heck out of here.”
