GOP rep. asks doctor to explain Biden's cognitive exam exemption

 February 16, 2024

U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) wants President Joe Biden's doctor to explain why exactly it is that Biden will not be undergoing a cognitive exam as part of his upcoming medical examination.

Hunt made the request in a letter that he sent to Biden's physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor. The letter was reviewed "exclusively" by Breitbart News.

This comes after the Biden White House made it clear that Biden, despite the concerns about his mental health, will not be undergoing a cognitive exam. There will be more on this in a moment.

Hunt's letter also comes after Special Counsel Robert Hur's recent report, in which Hur decided not to prosecute Biden for unlawfully mishandling classified materials, because, in Hur's opinion, a jury would be unlikely to find Biden guilty given that, as Hur put it, Biden is "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

Hunt's letter

In his letter, Hunt essentially argues that Biden ought to be given a cognitive exam for national security reasons.

Hunt wrote:

He is the President of the United States and, accordingly, his declining health impacts the safety of American citizens. Moreover, with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s recent hospitalization, our country’s foreign entanglements, and increasing questions regarding President Biden’s cognitive decline, Americans need confirmation that our country is being run by someone with the mental and physical ability to discharge the duties of commander-in-chief.

Hunt did reference Hur's report in his letter. The congressman also highlighted what he referred to as Biden's "larger pattern of cognitive deterioration."

Hunt wrote that, "at the very least," Biden ought to undergo "a mental examination."

After insisting that this is not a partisan issue, Hunt concluded by asking O'Connor a series of questions about the decision not to give Biden a cognitive exam. Among the questions was this: "Given Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report referencing President Biden’s 'poor memory,' why would a cognitive screening exam not be necessary?"

It's not happening

The Biden White House has been clear that the president will not be undergoing a cognitive examination.

"White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Biden's physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, does not believe a cognitive test is necessary. She said O'Connor believes Biden proves his cognitive ability 'every day [in] how he operates and how he thinks,'" Fox News reports.

During the briefing, Jean-Pierre insisted that Biden is mentally sound - at least behind closed doors.

For example, she claimed, "When we have meetings with him and his staff, he is constantly pushing us, trying to get more information, and so that has been my experience with this president."

The problem, of course, is that Biden's public appearances make it very hard to believe that Jean-Pierre's statement is truthful.
