GOP lawmakers slam Biden’s proposed ‘huge cash reward’ for undocumented immigrants

President Joe Biden has faced mounting opposition to his immigration policies, which some critics say provides preferential treatment to undocumented immigrants.

Most recently, GOP lawmakers have expressed outrage over reports that the Biden administration is considering issuing payments to some individuals who cross into the United States illegally.

“Let that sink in”

As the Wall Street Journal reported, the White House has proposed handing out as much as $450,000 to each migrant impacted by former President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance southern border strategy that resulted in family members being held in separate detention facilities.

Many of those migrants are now suiting the federal government, with attorneys seeking $3.4 million for each family unit.

If Biden’s suggested counteroffer of $450,000 per individual is implemented, the total cost could be as high as $1 billion.

A number of prominent Republicans have reacted harshly to the report, including U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX).

“Biden wants to pay illegal immigrants $450,000 for their hardship while breaking our laws,” he wrote. “For perspective, if a service member is killed in action, their next of kin gets an insurance payment of $400,000. Let that sink in.”

“This is the height of insanity”

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) also denounced the idea, insisting that it would only exacerbate the current southern border crisis.

“It would be unthinkable to pay damages to a burglar who broke into your home for the ‘psychological trauma’ they endured during the crime,” he argued. “And yet the Biden administration wants to reward migrants who illegally entered our country with up to $450,000 each for just that reason. The Biden administration’s promises of citizenship and entitlement programs have already caused the worst border crisis in history — a huge cash reward will make it even worse. This is the height of insanity.”

Both Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence also weighed in with their thoughts about Biden’s reportedly proposal.

“No country can sustain what’s happening to our country,” the former president said, asserting that his successor’s plan is “not even believable.”

For his part, Pence slammed the “totally unacceptable” proposal, insisting that undocumented immigrants are “abusing our asylum system and this is one more message that will continue to be a magnet on people that are coming north of the border.”
