Hunter Biden might have thought the scrutinization of his newfound art career was behind him, but some Republican members of Congress are going above and beyond to make sure the president’s son stays in line.
According to Fox News, Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL) is moving to push a bill that will require the non-dependent children of a president to disclose their finances, in the name of transparency, and to assure the voting public that nothing seedy is happening, which is a genuine worry for many, as far as Hunter Biden is concerned.
What does the bill do?
First, it’s important to appreciate the clever and downright hilarious name that Waltz gave the bill, which will surely generate press attention on its own.
Known as the Preventing Anonymous Income by Necessitating Transparency of Executive Relatives (PAINTER) Act, the bill will require both presidents and vice presidents to disclose their childrens’ revenue.
The call for such a bill is not without precedent, as a similar law is already on the books under the Ethics in Government Act, which requires financial disclosures for spouses and dependent children of sitting presidents.
But Waltz held nothing back when describing the primary purpose for his latest bill proposal, suggesting that it might be the only way to stop Hunter Biden from “the obvious and shameless grift that’s going on with Hunter Biden’s art sales, for which he is obviously not qualified to do and is only doing to continue to profit off of his family name.”
“Look, this is just an obvious and despicable trend,” Waltz told Fox News, adding “I mean we can keep going down the list of egregious act after egregious act, and we have to put a stop to it.”
For transparency’s sake
Waltz made it clear that he simply wants to ensure that Hunter Biden isn’t using his influence-peddling skills in America, while his father is president.
“And that’s really what this is all about, is just getting some transparency and shining a light on this,” Waltz said. “We should know who is backchanneling, backdooring and buying influence — which Hunter Biden has a long history of selling — to the President of the United States.”
The Florida lawmaker also insisted that Hunter Biden’s ties to Chinese business partners poses a threat, warning that Chinese operatives will do just about anything to get their hands on American tech.
“I can tell you again – I’m on the China task force – the Chinese aren’t looking to find investors like Hunter Biden to buy into shoestring factories,” the GOP lawmaker continued. “They want artificial intelligence, advanced materials, quantum computing, robotics.”
While Waltz might have trouble passing such a bill given the Democrats’ slim majority in the House, it’ll likely receive much more attention if the GOP manages to sweep the lower chamber in 2022, as predicted.
