GOP senators demand AG Garland designate prosecutor over Hunter Biden as protected special counsel

It was previously revealed that Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, is under federal investigation for alleged crimes related to his dubious foreign business dealings over the years, with that probe being based in Delaware and led by U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed to that office by former President Donald Trump.

Now a group of Republican senators is calling upon Attorney General Merrick Garland to name Weiss as a special counsel in the matter in order to prevent that investigation from being politicized or prematurely shut down, the Daily Wire reported.

Such a designation was deemed necessary by the GOP senators due to multiple examples of overt politicization of the Justice Department under Garland’s leadership and amid concerns that the politicized DOJ would, in some form or fashion, interfere with the Hunter Biden probe in order to protect the president and his son.

Time to appoint a special counsel

Fox News was the first to report on the letter to AG Garland that was drafted jointly by Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) along with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and joined by 27 other Republican members of the Senate.

That letter, which was dated for Friday but wasn’t delivered until Monday, began with a deserved critique of Garland’s failure to fulfill his promise to ensure that the DOJ remained politics-free and cited several examples of that obvious failure.

Those examples included an announced crackdown on concerned parents at school board meetings, targeting Republican-led state election law reforms with lawsuits, the targeting of former President Trump and his allies with investigations and indictments, and the refusal to protect Supreme Court justices and pro-life facilities and individuals from threats and attacks perpetrated by pro-abortion activists.

As for the matter at hand of U.S. Attorney Weiss’ probe of Hunter Biden, the senators wrote, “There is no way of knowing the entire scope of the investigation, but evidence seems to be mounting that Hunter Biden committed numerous federal crimes, including, but not limited to, tax fraud, money laundering, and foreign-lobbying violations.”

The senators then pointed to Garland’s statutory authority to designate a special counsel for certain matters, and said, “Given that the investigation involves the President’s son, we believe it is important to provide U.S. Attorney Weiss with special counsel authorities and protections to allow him to investigate an appropriate scope of potential criminal conduct, avoid the appearance of impropriety, and provide additional assurances to the American people that the Hunter Biden investigation is free from political influence.”

Designation would help restore public “faith” in DOJ integrity

Such concerns about political interference in the ongoing Hunter Biden are legitimate in light of recent allegations put forward by multiple anonymous FBI whistleblowers with regard to claims that high-level FBI officials proactively worked to “downplay and discredit negative information” about the president’s son and even attempted to completely and prematurely shut down certain investigative avenues into Hunter’s alleged criminal activities.

Further, the GOP senators also highlighted a recent memo that Garland himself issued that was widely perceived as a threat against current and future potential whistleblowers by prohibiting DOJ and FBI employees from contacting congressional members and staffers without official authorization — a move that effectively chills and silences prospective whistleblowers from speaking out.

“Given the politicization of the DOJ under your watch and the importance of avoiding any appearance of impropriety, the undersigned request that you provide U.S. Attorney Weiss the full protections and authorities of a special counsel,” the senators concluded. “This is one important action you can take that will go a long way in restoring faith in our governmental institutions.”

Of course, it appears to many Americans that AG Garland has no interest in “restoring faith” in governmental institutions like the DOJ and FBI — his actions say the exact opposite — so nobody should hold their breath in anticipation of his answering this call from the GOP senators and designating U.S. Attorney Weiss as a special counsel over the Hunter Biden probe.
