House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been among the most vocal advocates for a thorough investigation into the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill.
Some of her GOP colleagues, however, have accused her of apparently covering up evidence that she and others had prior knowledge of the planned events but did nothing to increase security.
“At the direction of the speaker”
According to the Washington Times, Pelosi is facing scrutiny not only for a perceived lack of security preparations but also claims that she led an effort to hide evidence thereof.
Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL), the ranking Republican on the House Administration Committee overseeing the Capitol, offered his take in a letter he sent to Pelosi on behalf of the panel’s Republican members.
“The Sergeant at Arms, at the direction of the speaker, has refused to provide us their communications surrounding Jan. 6,” he later said in summarizing his letter. “I believe those records will show there was a lot of communications and coordination between the speaker’s office and law enforcement officials leading up to and on Jan. 6.”
He pointed out in his letter that he sent document-preservation requests to multiple agencies in the aftermath of the riot — but just one complied.
Evidence uncovered thus far indicates that the U.S. Capitol Police requested deployment of National Guard troops but the then-acting sergeant at arms denied the request due to the bad “optics” of a military presence surrounding the Capitol grounds.
“We’ve made multiple attempts”
Davis went on to cite additional “conflicting testimony” from officials as further evidence for the preservation of pertinent documents. He called out Pelosi for not ordering the officials under her command to comply with his requests.
“It’s been almost a year since the first request,” said Ashley Phelps, a spokesperson for committee Republicans. “We’ve made multiple attempts since to get this information but have been unsuccessful each time.”
Even former President Donald Trump has joined in on the developing narrative against Pelosi.
“What has become more and more obvious to ALL is that the LameStream Media will not report the facts that Nancy Pelosi and the Capitol Sergeant-at-Arms denied requests for the D.C. National Guard or Military to be present at the Capitol,” Trump asserted in a statement on Tuesday.
He went on to summarize the chief concern of many in his party: “Why will Crazy Nancy Pelosi not provide her communications with the House Sergeant-at-Arms and the House Chief Administrative Officer, or promise to retain these vital messages, which many feel she has already destroyed — perhaps illegally?”
