Republican who attacked Parkland teen drops out of race

A Republican running for the Maine state House of Representatives has quit the race after he made loathsome comments about one of the teen activists and survivors of the Parkland school shooting.

Leslie Gibson quit the race, and most likely ended his political career, after he wrote a tweet that called Emma Gonzalez a “skinhead lesbian.”

Tweet That Ended A Career.

Many conservatives have had disagreements with the way some of the Parkland school shooting survivors have campaigned in the weeks after the attack.

Many, including Gonzalez and her classmates David Hogg and Cameron Kasky, have been on television pushing people to vote Democrat, calling National Rifle Association spokeswoman Dana Loesch a killer and the NRA terrorists.

But they are still kids and there is a way to have a conversation with decorum, even if sometimes the kids do not.

“There is nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing that she has to say unless you’re a frothing at the mouth moonbat,” Gibson said in a tweet that has now been deleted.

Again, Gonzalez pushes many left wing ideas and her social media history shows that she was a progressive before the Parkland shooting, but that is irrelevant.

We Must Rise Above The Hate.

In order for conservatives to win the debate we must not use the worst forms of arguing.

Gibson apologized to Gonzalez in another tweet, but the damage was done.

“I would like to extend to you my most sincere apology for how I addressed you. It was wrong and unacceptable. You are doing work that is important to you. I would like to extend my hand in friendship and understanding to you,” he wrote.

He said that because of his career in the military “I am very passionate about protecting our constitutional rights from those who seek their elimination. It was not appropriate to single out the Parkland students, but I stand firm in my defense of our constitutional rights.”

That is fine and fighting for our Constitutional rights is honorable.

But the fact that Gonzalez has a shaved head means nothing in the debate about gun control.

Whatever her sexual preference is, has no bearing on the fact that she seems to know next to nothing about the Constitution.

“I am not walking away with my head hung low. I am walking away with my head held high,” Gibson told The Portland Press Herald.

But how can he hold his head high?

We fight on the battlefield of ideas and that is where our arguments need to be.

Gibson was running unopposed but after his hateful tweet both another Republican and a Democrat decided to run.

He snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. He is not a representative of mainstream conservative thinking and Republicans should count their blessings that he did not win.
