Ruth Bader Ginsburg thanks US Women’s National Soccer team for honorary jersey
It seems that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been hiding in the shadows since having surgery in December to remove cancerous nodules from her lungs. But a recent act of hers is now garnering some attention on social media.
This is all due to U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team member Becky Sauerbrunn, who posted to Twitter a photo of a thank-you letter sent by Ginsburg.
A Proud Ginsburg
The justice’s thank-you letter was prompted by Sauerbrunn gifting her a “Ginsburg” jersey that the defender wore during the team’s participation in the SheBelieves Cup. The March 2019 letter was addressed to “The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and Becky Sauerbrunn.”
“For the surprise package received today, huge thanks,” Ginsburg wrote. “I am proud to be among the women chosen for recognition in the 2019 SheBelieves game against England.”
The justice added that she plans to don the ceremonial jersey regularly when engaging in her well-known workouts.
The most recent edition of the SheBelieves Cup took place from late February through early March. It was the fourth iteration of the women’s invitational.
Among the countries chosen to compete were the United States, England, Brazil, and Japan. The U.S. team was attempting to defend its championship from the prior year.
However, this time around, the Americans were not able to achieve a repeat, with the 2019 title going to the team from England for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Women Inspiring Women
As part of the event, each player wore a jersey bearing the name of a female whom they personally find inspirational. Included among the honorees were tennis player Serena Williams, entertainer Beyonce Knowles-Carter, actress Jennifer Lawrence, rapper Cardi B, and others.
Sauerbrunn selected the “Notorious RBG” as her motivating figure. The soccer player added the reference to the word “Notorious,” alluding to the nickname bestowed on the justice by her legions of liberal fans.
“She’s a complete rock star,” said Sauerbrunn of Ginsubrg during the tournament. “Dissenting opinion, battling cancer, and then showing up to vote. What can’t she do? I just think she’s amazing,” she added.
Although she has become somewhat of a public celebrity, particularly among members of the left, Ginsburg is rarely seen in public, something that has been especially true in the midst of her recent health issues. That she took the time to thank Sauerbrunn and her team for the jersey is almost certainly something the young soccer star will never forget.
