A top Democrat in the U.S. Senate is ripping the mask off on her party’s radical plans for gun reform.
According to Breitbart, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand admitted this week that congressional Democrats are pushing forward on a number of new gun control measures, including one that would ban “assault rifles and large magazines.”
Her remarks come in the wake of a shooting in San Jose, California on Wednesday that left 10 dead, including the gunman, The New York Times reported.
Gillibrand was speaking on-air Thursday with the co-hosts of the ABC daytime talkshow The View.
There, the Democrat senator was asked about the tragedy in San Jose, including whether there’s “any hope…on the horizon for breaking this cycle and Congress perhaps acting together in a bipartisan fashion.”
“I think there is hope,” Gillibrand responded, according to Breitbart. “One of the bills that I lead is ending gun trafficking because a lot of the senseless gun violence we see in New York State, whether it’s in the Bronx or in Brooklyn, is because of gun violence with guns that have been trafficked into the state and sold directly to gang members. That vote last time got 58 bipartisan votes, so we’re very close to 60.”
Sixty votes would be a filibuster-proof majority for Dems in the upper chamber.
“Looking to us”
Gillibrand also said plainly on Thursday that Democrats “want to have universal background checks…and we want to ban assault rifles and large magazines.”
“It’s shocking that Congress did nothing after Sandy Hook,” the New York lawmaker added, referring to a 2012 shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that killed 26, including 20 students.
“So perhaps in this era of bipartisanship that we can come together and actually get something done on it,” Gillibrand concluded, according to Breitbart. “I’m hopeful, and I think we should keep trying because the nation is looking to us to get something done.”
It’s a sentiment that has been echoed by President Joe Biden and others on the left who are bent on stamping out Americans’ Second Amendment rights. But as Breitbart noted in a separate report, the state of California already has a ban on “assault weapons,” as well as “universal background checks, a red flag law, a 10-day waiting period on gun sales, [and] a limit on the number of guns a law-abiding citizen can purchase in a month,” among other measures — none of which served to prevent the tragedy in San Jose this week.
Lawmakers in Washington certainly need to start coming up with solutions to this long-standing and horrific problem, but it seems everything they’ve suggested so far is doomed to fail. Gillibrand and company may do well to head back to the drawing board on this one.
