In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, governments across the globe have increasingly resorted to authoritarian tactics to compel compliance from citizens in their various mitigation efforts.
Falling right in line, Germany has just fast-tracked a bill that will require all health care workers in the country to choose between getting vaccinated or keeping their jobs, the Associated Press reported Friday.
The German government is reportedly also considering a much broader mandate on vaccines that would apply to all who reside there.
“We cannot accept this”
German media outlet DW reported Friday that both chambers of that nation’s parliament — the lower Bundestag and upper Bundesrat — voted to approve legislation making coronavirus vaccines mandatory for health care workers.
The mandate would reportedly apply to “workers in hospitals, nursing homes, doctors’ offices, facilities for people with disabilities and other health facilities,” all of whom must now provide proof of vaccination for or recent recovery from COVID-19 in order to remain employed, with only limited exemptions available for verifiable medical reasons.
“This vaccine mandate is necessary because it’s completely unacceptable that, after two years of pandemic, people who have entrusted their care to us are dying unnecessarily in institutions because unvaccinated people work there,” German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said, according to DW. “We cannot accept this.”
In addition to making COVID vaccines mandatory for all health care workers, the new law — which is fully supported by new Chancellor Olaf Scholz — also expands who is authorized to administer vaccines to include dentists, pharmacists, and even veterinarians.
It also reportedly provides the legal framework to support additional restrictions on public venues and gathering spots.
Lockdowns and restrictions
According to Politico, the German government had just prior to this imposed new and stringent restrictions on unvaccinated individuals that, among other things, are meant to keep them out of public venues like restaurants and limit private gatherings of more than two people from different households.
Even those who are fully vaccinated and have been granted the permission of the German government to go about their daily lives will have to endure a variety of restrictions, albeit not quite as severe. Those, according to Politico, include restrictions on venue capacity and mask mandates for all ages.
It all comes alongside the ever-present threat of total lockdowns in the European nation, not to mention the very real risk that the definition of what constitutes “fully vaccinated” could change at any point, as booster shots continue to gain widespread support among public health officials.
Will the insanity ever end?
