Last week, all we heard about was the legal opinion of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that the Trump administration broke the law in temporarily withholding aid to Ukraine.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) even used the report to demand Trump’s resignation, but every Democrat seems to have forgotten the seven times their own beloved President Barack Obama was nailed by the GAO for violating federal law as well, as Breitbart outlined in a report on Thursday.
The GAO is a government watchdog agency that offers non-binding legal opinions on government policy and administration behavior. When the GAO recently declared that holding back Ukraine’s aid was a violation of the Impoundment Control Act (ICA), Dems acted as though it was Christmas morning all over again.
Democrats at all levels were calling this a “bombshell” announcement. However, not a single one of them acted in the same manner when then-President Barack Obama was found to have broken federal laws seven times by the GAO when he was in office.
So if one GAO violation is grounds for impeaching Trump, why was there never a whisper from the left or right to impeach Obama over his seven violations?
In 2008, the Secret Service overspent on presidential candidate protection by more than $5 million. Obama covered these costs through other programs without giving Congress the appropriate 15-days notice.
In 2014, the Department of Treasury violated the Antideficiency Act by using volunteer services of four individuals for several months even though the “Treasury did not appoint any of the individuals to federal employment, nor did any individual qualify as a student, who may, under certain circumstances, perform voluntary service.”
Remember the Bowe Bergdahl swap for terrorists? Well, once again, that was illegal, as Obama was required to give Congress a 30-day notice, but instead, he just took it upon himself to carry this out.
Obama’s Housing and Urban Development Department violated several laws when it sent out emails asking for “friends” to lobby against Republicans in the Senate. The Obama-era Environmental Protection Agency violated the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act as well as the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Act in 2015 by using government social media accounts to rail for Waters of the United States regulations.
In 2016, the GAO reversed a previous decision and stated that the Obama administration violated the law by attempting to block an interview for a regional director with the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
Finally, in 2016, the Obama-era Federal Maritime Commission violated the Consolidated Appropriations Act and the Antideficiency Act by overspending on redecorating its offices.
Now, admittedly, some of these violations aren’t that much of a “bombshell,” but the $5 million spending spree and the Bergdahl prisoner swap really stand out. So Dems, unless you plan on making noise about Obama, let’s just file this GAO ruling on Trump right next to the violations committed by his predecessor and move on to the real issues at hand.
