There has been ample speculation about whether President Joe Biden will seek a second term in 2024 and, if not, who else might be the most likely candidate to replace him as the Democratic Party’s nominee.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has been named as a top potential contender, and now a California fundraiser reportedly linked to the governor has said that Newsom will “absolutely” launch a 2024 campaign if Biden declines to run again, TheBlaze reported.
That assertion came as Biden recently appeared to waffle on his prior insistence that he would seek a second term in office, though it does also appear to contradict Newsom’s own adamant insistence that he will not run for the presidency in 2024 regardless of whether Biden runs or not.
“He will run if Biden does not”
TheWrap reportedly exclusively on Monday that, according to two unnamed sources said to be knowledgeable of Newsom’s plans, the governor would “undeniably, unequivocally” mount a 2024 campaign for the White House if President Biden wasn’t in the running.
“After this midterm election is over, he absolutely is going to announce that he is running for the presidency once Biden announces that he is not running,” an anonymous described as a “leading California fundraiser” with ties to Newsom’s family said of the progressive governor.
“No ifs, ands, or buts. He will run if Biden does not,” that fundraiser added.
Newsom previously doubled down on “No” to 2024 rumors
Yet, that claim runs directly counter to Gov. Newsom’s own repeated dismissal of any rumors about a potential 2024 run — even if President Biden isn’t running for re-election, according to a Marketwatch report.
In a late-August interview with ABC News, Newsom said “No,” a 2024 run was “absolutely” not part of his plans and was “not gonna happen.”
Pressed on the matter by the reporter, the governor referenced his own prior quote in May to the San Francisco Chronicle that there was a “subzero” chance of him mounting a 2024 presidential campaign.
Newsom reiterated that stance to the ABC reporter and said, “No. I said ‘subzero,’ I’ve been doing it in foreign languages … I don’t know how many times I have to say it.”
Not the first politician to keep true ambitions secret
Of course, countless politicians from both parties over the decades have repeatedly insisted that they had no intentions of running for the presidency before later doing an about-face and launching a presidential campaign, and Gov. Newsom — who faces his own gubernatorial re-election bid in November — could simply be waiting until after that election to reveal his actual ambition for the White House.
Meanwhile, TheBlaze noted that President Biden himself seemed to backtrack on his prior insistence about a 2024 second term run in his recent “60 Minutes” interview, while at the same time, Newsom has been running ads nationwide to tout California and attack Republicans and, per Marketwatch’s observance of the betting markets, had the best odds second only to Biden at being picked as the Democratic nominee in that party’s 2024 primary.
