Fox News attracts more viewers than CNN, MSNBC combined: Report

Fox News Channel has a long record of beating its cable news rivals in the ratings, but its dominance appears to have recently reached new heights.

According to last week’s Nielsen cable television ratings, Fox News averaged more viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined.

Fox News leads the pack

As the network itself reported, that accomplishment included the average audience for daytime and primetime hours as well as among the key demographic of viewers between 25 and 54 years old.

Even as its top rivals have continually shed viewers since President Joe Biden’s inauguration, Fox News has maintained its status as the top-rated cable news channel for 35 weeks straight.

According to TV Newser, Fox News has averaged nearly 1.4 million viewers during the hours between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., compared to just 676,000 for MSNBC and 481,000 for CNN.

Within the key demographic, Fox News once again dominated the field with an average of 226,000 viewers during the same hours. CNN averaged 102,000 viewers and MSNBC averaged just 74,000.

A similar trend played out during the primetime hours of 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. While Fox News attracted an average of 2.3 million viewers, MSNBC tallied just 1.2 million and CNN trailed further behind with only about 661,000. Among the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged roughly 356,000 viewers compared to 145,000 for CNN and 140,000 for MSNBC.

Ratings top even some network shows

Beyond the cable news landscape, Fox News Channel is the only cable channel to consistently break the million-viewer mark.

The next closest competitors were TBS with 930,000 — likely bolstered by its MLB playoff coverage — and ESPN with 897,000.

It is also worth noting that Fox News even took on network programming in certain timeslots. The late-night program hosted by Greg Gutfeld beat rivals including NBC’s Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! — not to mention every program aired at any point during the day on CNN.

While Fox News viewership has remained fairly consistent throughout the year, CNN and MSNBC continue to see their respective ratings slip. Some CNN programs have hit their lowest point since 2016 while MSNBC’s ratings fell to a low point not seen since 1997.

In terms of specific shows, Fox News was the home of the top six programs and 13 of the top 15. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow was the highest-ranked non-Fox host, coming in seventh place.
