As leftists continue to call for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s impeachment, Fox News cites one expert as explaining how the Democrats’ campaign against Thomas might be successful, even if they don’t get him impeached.
The left has been targeting Thomas for years. But, leftists have really ramped things up following a recent report from CBS News and The Washington Post that revealed text messages exchanged between Thomas’s wife, conservative advocate Virginia Thomas, and then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows following the 2020 presidential election.
In those text messages, Virginia Thomas urges Meadows to contest the results of the election, which, at one point, she referred to as the “greatest Heist of our History.”
This, says the left, in combination with the fact that Justice Thomas participated in a case regarding the House Jan. 6 committee, is sufficient grounds for Thomas’s impeachment.
The impeachment calls
Far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is one of the latest members of Congress to argue that Thomas ought to at least resign.
“Clarence Thomas should resign,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “If not, his failure to disclose income from right-wing organizations, recuse himself from matters involving his wife, and his vote to block the Jan 6th commission from key information must be investigated and could serve as grounds for impeachment.”
A win-win for the Dems?
Fox cites James Wallner, the R Street Institute resident senior fellow for governance, as explaining why the Democrats’ campaign against Thomas might be successful, if not directly, indirectly.
First off, in terms of impeachment, Wallner told the outlet that there is no reason why the left cannot try to impeach Thomas for whatever they want to impeach him for, whether it is his politics, his wife, or whatever.
Here, Wallner referenced the only impeachment of a Supreme Court justice in history, the impeachment in the early 1800s of Samuel Chase. The basis for that impeachment was Chase’s politics.
But, Wallner goes on to explain to the outlet that, even if the Democrats don’t get Thomas impeached, they may still get a partial victory, namely, “less political involvement from Virginia Thomas, or less Supreme Court involvement with 2020 election cases.”
Neither Thomas nor his wife has responded to the situation. They are no strangers to these sorts of attacks. They haven’t given in to the left so far, and there is no sign that they are going to give in now.
