Fox News host Juan Williams slams Trump’s Thanksgiving trip to Afghanistan

Fox News political analyst Juan Williams shocked viewers with his take on President Donald Trump’s Thanksgiving day trip to Afghanistan.

Trump had made a secret trip to visit troops in Afghanistan, while the rest of the nation was busy enjoying the holiday. But Williams stunned his viewers by dismissing the trip as nothing more than a “photo-op,” the Daily Caller reported.

Trump’s trip

Our troops overseas have a tough time whenever they are deployed, but it’s likely even harder during the holiday season. Not only are they stuck in an unfriendly place for long periods of time, but they are also separated from family.

President Trump taking the opportunity to visit them and serve them is an act of compassion and solidarity that all leaders of the nation should emulate.

President Trump’s trip was kept under wraps for both security and publicity purposes. A highly-touted trip would really look like nothing more than a photo-op. Trump’s objective with his decision to embark on the surprise trip was clear. A visit on Thanksgiving without fanfare or drama would ensure the troops and Trump’s party were kept safe.

Williams pooh-poohed Trump’s Thanksgiving effort, saying “the reports this week are that he’s emulating Bill Clinton, who stayed busy during the impeachment hearings and did so quite to his political profit…The other part of the political spin is that with Trump, it seemed… That it looks like a photo op,” he noted.

“Remember, he hadn’t gone to visit any war zone until last year, he was criticized for it. This is the first visit to Afghanistan, our longest war, 2,000 plus Americans dead. He had no preparation.” Williams continued.

Williams is notorious for his criticisms of Trump, but even fellow liberals may have been a little taken aback by Williams’ political pandering.

Long-term plans

Trump has plans to cut forces stationed in Afghanistan by half. The president has been very clear about his desire to bring troops home and leave the never-ending wars in the Middle East for good.

In a speech in front of the troops at Bagram, President Trump said: “There’s nowhere I’d rather celebrate this Thanksgiving than right here with the toughest, strongest, best and bravest warriors on the face of the earth – you are indeed that.”

Trump recognizes the cost of our involvement in Afghanistan and he cares about our troops who are stationed there. Too much American blood has been spilled in a war that doesn’t seem to have an endpoint or a defined objective.

Journalists and political commentators like Juan Williams can try to always look for the worst in Trump, but refusing to give credit where credit is due only distances the media further from the American people.
