President Donald Trump’s hard-line stance on illegal immigration has just been vindicated.
Nearly 60% of Florida voters oppose giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, according to a new poll taken last month.
New poll of Florida voters
The poll, which was conducted by the University of North Florida, found that among Republicans, that percentage was even higher at 87%.
50% of independent voters either strongly or somewhat opposed it while 42% supported it; 8% didn’t know.
Unsurprisingly, Democrats veered the other way — 61% support allowing illegally-present people to obtain driver’s licenses.
The poll also showed that 72% of all respondents approve of the job Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is doing. That includes over 90% of the Republicans and over 50% of the Democrats.
Another somewhat surprising poll result showed that a majority of voters want to legalize recreational marijuana. Even among Republicans, support was up at 54%.
Liberal states lead the way
Several liberal states have already started issuing driver’s licenses to people who are in the U.S. illegally. California has been legitimizing illegal immigration by granting licenses to illegal immigrants since 2015.
New York is set to follow suit soon, after a judge dismissed a challenge to the new “Green Light Law” on Friday.
In all, thirteen states currently allow illegal immigrants to obtain licenses, including Connecticut, Colorado, Utah, and Washington. Generally, some form of documentation such as a passport or evidence of state residency is required.
Securing the border
While Democrats seem to think that the best way to handle the illegal immigration problem is to just open the border, many Americans share the president’s view that immigration should proceed in an orderly and lawful fashion. In fact, that’s a big part of why Trump won in 2016.
The question now is, will it still propel him in 2020? We’ll find out.
