We know Republicans are sick and tired of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) holding onto the articles of impeachment.
Now, Democrats are starting to get fed up as well. Pelosi’s fellow San Fransisco lawmaker Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) ordered Pelosi to “send them over” on Wednesday, according to the Washington Examiner.
Several other Senate Democrats have publicly revolted against Pelosi’s obstruction as well.
Calling Pelosi out
Speaker Pelosi has had the articles of impeachment in hand since before the Christmas break. She is reportedly holding them as leverage to get agreement on some very specific terms in the Senate trial.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has already called Pelosi’s stance a non-starter, and Pelosi has responded by continuing to refuse to transmit the articles.
While Pelosi’s strategy played okay with Democrats during the break, they are now growing tired of this political stunt in the Senate. “If we’re going to do it, she should send them over. I don’t see what good delay does,” Sen. Feinstein said.
Additionally, Sens. Doug Jones (D-AL), Christoper Murphy (D-CT), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) have all expressed their desire for Nancy Pelosi to “get moving on this,” according to Breitbart.
McConnell has the votes
Sen. McConnell recently stated that in terms of the rules of the trial, he has the support of at least 51 Republican senators, so whatever rules he wants to put in place regarding the Senate impeachment trial are all but guaranteed approval.
However, even with the votes, McConnell cannot technically proceed until the articles are presented to the Senate. This is not a constitutional rule, but rather one that was put in place by the upper chamber itself.
Technically, McConnell could put forth a resolution to formally change or amend this rule, a move Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has already recommended.
McConnell does not seem to be willing to go that far, but the Senate leader clearly is not going to allow Pelosi to hold the Senate hostage over this.
Meanwhile, the longer Pelosi delays, the more foolish her prior declarations about the historic urgency of impeachment appear.
