NBC News reports that federal prosecutors are currently considering whether or not to bring several different charges against Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.

NBC obtained this information from two anonymous sources who are said to be "familiar with the matter."

The possible charges

According to NBC's report, federal prosecutors could possibly bring up to four different charges against Hunter Biden: three charges that are related to tax crimes and one charge that is related to a gun purchase.

Per the outlet:

The possible charges are two misdemeanor counts for failure to file taxes, a single felony count of tax evasion related to a business expense for one year of taxes, and the gun charge, also a potential felony.

Whether all or any of these charges will ultimately be brought against Hunter Biden is a decision that will be made by U.S. Attorney David Weiss, an appointee of former President Donald Trump.

"Growing frustration"

The federal investigation, which is being led by the FBI and Internal Revenue Service (IRS), into Hunter Biden is nothing new.

In fact, investigators have been looking into Hunter Biden's foreign business and tax affairs since at least 2018. And, not only that but the investigation was reportedly finished - more or less - about a year ago.

NBC News, in its report, states that, considering this fact, there is "growing frustration" in the FBI that action hasn't been taken.

Per NBC:

Two senior law enforcement sources told NBC News about "growing frustration" inside the FBI because investigators finished the bulk of their work on the case about a year ago. A senior law enforcement source said the IRS finished its investigation more than a year ago.

So, the big question is:

Why the delay?

A big news item this past week was the allegations that an IRS whistleblower made about the investigation into Hunter Biden, saying that, essentially, the investigation has been corrupted.

The Daily Wire provides a rundown of the allegations. The outlet writes:

Disclosures made to the government watchdogs “contradict sworn testimony to Congress by a senior political appointee,” “involve failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition of the case,” and “detail examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected,” according to the letter.

The White House has attempted to push back on the allegations.

As for what's next, Fox News reports that Hunter Biden's lawyers are now scheduled to meet with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) - including Weiss) next week.
