The Daily Mail reports that the FBI is investigating suspicious packages that Republican Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake received over the weekend.
The packages were sent to Lake’s campaign office on Saturday when she was not there. They were received and opened by Lake’s staff and are said to have contained two envelopes with a white powdery substance as well as threatening messages.
No injuries have been reported thus far.
“One of our wonderful staffers, a couple of them, were actually exposed, and so far they’re doing okay,” Lake reported. “We’re monitoring them, and we want to make sure that everything’s okay.”
An investigation is underway
Lake’s staff reported the suspicious packages, which led to an FBI response. A hazmat team and a bomb squad were deployed.
The authorities remained at Lake’s office investigating from 10 p.m. on Saturday to 5 a.m. on Sunday. And, the investigation, which also includes the Phonix Police Department, continues.
It still remains unclear what the white substance is. Lake says that it has been sent to a lab for testing.
Lake on Sunday provided some comments on the situation, saying:
We’re in dangerous times. This is not the first time we’ve been threatened. I’ve been threatened many times. Our tires have been slashed. We’ve had screws drilled into our tires so that our tires would blow out while we’re on the road. We are living in dangerous times, and that’s why we need to elect somebody who’s strong and a fighter and not a coward. We’ll get to the bottom of this. I really don’t want to get too far ahead of it.
Lake is in the lead
Lake, a Trump-endorsed Republican, is facing off against Democrat Kaite Hobbs in the race for Arizona’s governorship. Lake does appear to have the advantage heading into Tuesday.
Real Clear Politics has Lake up, on average, by 1.8 percentage points over Hobbs.
FiveThirtyEight similarly has Lake “slightly favored” to beat Hobbs, with Lake winning in 62 out of 100 scenarios.
Lake, a former news anchor, has turned into a formidable politician, and so, it is not that surprising that, given how strong she has become, she is being targeted.
