Our political world is rife with corruption, this we already know. But this case is a bit more shocking than our usual run-of-the-mill scenario.
According to Breitbart, Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar, a Democrat, was arrested by the FBI this week on federal racketeering charges after being caught red-handed in a scheme that allegedly involved the use of his office as the center of a criminal empire.
Huizar has somehow managed to stay in office despite years of controversy. According to Breitbart, the Democrat made headlines in 2014 for a sexual harassment suit.
A history of corruption
The councilman was allegedly having an affair with another city employee, his deputy chief of staff.
But that’s not even the worst of it.
According to a new filing by the Justice Department, Huizar was allegedly taking bribes from Chinese contractors to get their projects eased through the system.
“Councilman Huizar violated the public trust to a staggering degree, allegedly soliciting and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from multiple sources over many years,” U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna stated, according to Breitbart.
He went on: “Using the power of his office to approve or stall large building projects, Huizar worked through a web of other corrupt city officials, lobbyists, consultants and developers to line his pockets and maintain his hold on Council District 14, which he turned into a money-making criminal enterprise that shaped the development landscape in Los Angeles.”
Draining the swamp
Sadly, Huizar is far too typical of what we are seeing from politicians these days, especially in California. While the lawmaker was raking in massive illegal paychecks, his district was falling apart at the seams.
Indeed, Huizar’s district happens to contain the infamous “Skid Row,” — an area of Los Angeles that is rampant with homelessness and where, according to The Sun, “meth costs $2-a-hit, medieval diseases are rife, and conditions are worse than refugee camps.”
Huizar, however, has done little, if anything, to address the problem. The homeless rate in L.A. County rose 13% last year, according to Breitbart, yet Huizar was only interested in lining his own pockets.
It’s time to lock him up and throw away the key. One can only hope the Justice Department will continue doing its part to drain the swamp.
