Fauci predicts ‘uptick’ in COVID cases, suggests possible return to mask mandates

The Democrats, led in pandemic guidance by Dr. Anthony Fauci, appear to be making another attempt to keep their COVID-19 narrative alive as the 2022 midterms near.

Breitbart News reports that Fauci is predicting an increase in COVID-19 cases as well as the possible return of restrictions, such as mandatory face masks.

Fauci’s back

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Biden administration’s chief medical adviser, made another television appearance over the weekend, as he has done countless times during the pandemic.

This time, Fauci appeared on ABC’s This Week. There he talked about the “uptick” in COVID-19 cases, which appears to be the result of the latest BA.2 variant.

“Obviously, there is concern that we are seeing an uptick in cases,” Fauci said. “As I mentioned over the last couple of weeks, that this is not unexpected, that you’re going to see an uptick when you pull back on the mitigation methods.”

Fauci continued by talking about pandemic restrictions. He said that based on the current statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), face mask-wearing is “not recommended.”

“If you look at the CDC calculation with their new metrics, it’s clear that most of the country, even though we’re seeing an uptick, is still in that green zone, which means that masking is not recommended in the sense of not required on indoor settings,” Fauci said. “But as people pull back when you have a highly transmissible virus like the BA.2 variant, and you have pulling back on mitigation methods at the same time there’s waning immunity, we’re going to see an uptick.”

The return of restrictions?

Fauci went on to talk about what he believes could lead to a return to pandemic restrictions, such as masking in public. He suggested that it will depend upon the severity and the number of cases.

“What we’re hoping happens, and I believe it will, is that you won’t see a concomitant comparable increase in severity in the sense of people requiring hospitalizations and deaths,” Fauci said.

“But,” he continued, “the idea that we’re going to see an uptick, I think people need to appreciate that’s the case and follow the CDC guidelines because, remember, when the metrics were put forth, the new metrics looking at the guidance of masking, it was said that if we do start seeing an uptick, particularly of hospitalizations, we may need to revert back to being more careful and having more utilizations of masks indoors.”

Background

Fauci has been laying low in recent weeks as Republicans have been threatening to investigate his role in the coronavirus pandemic should they win back Congress later this year. On top of this, there is the fact that Fauci and the left’s COVID narrative, according to polls, isn’t as accepted by the American public as it once was.

Fauci’s appearance on ABC appears to be one last attempt to keep both the narrative and with it, his relevance, alive.
