The mainstream narrative that the novel coronavirus emerged in late 2019 from a so-called “wet market” in Wuhan, China seems to be collapsing at the seams.
In a recent interview, White House health adviser and head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, admitted that he’s not 100% convinced that COVID-19 emerged as a natural phenomenon, the Washington Examiner reported.
Fauci’s concession has been perceived by some to bolster unproven theories that the pandemic may have been the result of a breach or mistake at a Chinese virology lab.
Fauci “in favor” of probe
The comments from Fauci came during an interview earlier this month with Politifact’s Katie Sanders. There, the Examiner said, Fauci was pressed on “whether he was still confident that COVID-19 emerged naturally.”
“No, actually,” the doctor replied. “No, I’m not convinced about that.”
Fauci indicated that the possibility remains that the virus could have emerged another way, and said he thinks “we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we find out to the best of our ability exactly what happened.”
“Certainly, the people who’ve investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could’ve been something else, and we need to find that out,” he explained, according to the Examiner.
“So, you know, that’s the reason why I said I’m perfectly in favor of any investigation that looks into the origin of the virus,” Fauci added.
The flip-flop doc
Of course, if you’ve listened to anything Fauci has said throughout the coronavirus pandemic, it’s hardly a surprise to hear him flip-flopping on yet another issue. With regard to the origins of the disease, Fauci was previously of the opinion that the lab theory was laughable.
“If you accept the premise, which is very strongly supported by scientific evidence, that it was not deliberately mutated and deliberately changed, and you say, if it was in the wild and evolving, the likelihood it jumped species naturally, someone will say, ‘Well, maybe somebody took it from the wild, put it in the lab, and then it escaped from the lab.’ But that means it was in the wild to begin with!” Fauci told National Geographic last spring, with a laugh.
He continued: “So that’s why I don’t get what they’re talking about. If it isn’t manipulated in the lab and you’re trying to say it escaped from the lab, then how did it get in the lab? It got in the lab because somebody isolated it from the environment. So that’s why I don’t spend a lot of time going in that circular argument.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said it is “extremely unlikely” that the virus emerged from a lab. But now, it seems even Dr. Fauci isn’t totally sure of the truth.
