Fauci confesses he’s been ‘moving the goal posts’ on COVID-19 herd immunity: Report

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has been heralded by the media as a sort of patron saint of pandemics whose word is as good as gospel when it comes to the coronavirus.

According to the Daily Caller, however, Saint Fauci confessed in a recent interview that he has been deliberately lying to the American public for the duration of the ongoing pandemic — at least with regard to what it takes for the U.S. population to reach what is known as “herd immunity.”

Fauci’s excuse for his dishonesty? His belief that the American public simply wasn’t ready to accept the hard truths that he has finally decided to bestow upon us all.

Herd immunity

According to the Daily Caller, the admission from Fauci came during a recent phone interview with The New York Times. Published Thursday, the Times‘ report revealed that Fauci believes the true number that America needs to hit for the population to achieve “herd immunity” and stop the spread of COVID-19 is 90%.

According to the Times, the standard estimate regarding herd immunity — which is still cited by the World Health Organization (WHO), for whatever that’s worth — is in the range of 60% to 70%, meaning roughly two-thirds of the population would need to be vaccinated or contract and survive the disease, thereby gaining at least temporary immunity, in order to halt its spread.

Fauci himself initially repeated that 60% to 70% figure during the early days of the pandemic, but his numbers had been inching higher in recent weeks, the Times noted. During a mid-December interview with CNBC, Fauci said herd immunity would come with “somewhere between 70, 75, maybe 80[%]” of Americans being vaccinated.

Even in that same interview with CNBC, Fauci subsequently bumped that figure up to “between 75[%] and 80, 85[%] of the population.”

Shifting the goal posts

When it comes to moving the goal posts, it seems Fauci is an expert — and the Times called him out on it.

“Dr. Fauci acknowledged that he had slowly but deliberately been moving the goal posts. He is doing so, he said, partly based on new science, and partly on his gut feeling that the country is finally ready to hear what he really thinks,” the paper reported. “Hard as it may be to hear, he said, he believes that it may take close to 90 percent immunity to bring the virus to a halt,” the Times added.

As infuriating as Dr. Fauci’s duplicitousness on herd immunity may be, it certainly isn’t the only time that the liberal media’s pandemic savior has misled the public with regard to the novel coronavirus.

Who could forget the “15 days to slow the spread” that somehow transformed into nine months? And then there’s the issue of face masks, which Fauci said at the beginning stages of the pandemic were unnecessary, according to Business Insider, but now, must be worn at all times.

If Americans had any trust left in Dr. Fauci, he’s effectively quashed it at this point.
