Breitbart News reports that far-left Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) recently made another call for the number of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court to be expanded, something also referred to as “court-packing.”
Omar, a member of the s0-called squad, did so during an interview that she participated in Friday on ABC News’ GMA3.
“There’s not a specific number”
Omar began by arguing that the number of justices on the court can be altered since the number is not set by the U.S. Constitution.
Host TJ Homes then asked Omar to respond to the argument that, if Democrats expand the court now, Republicans will just do the same when they are in power, which will result in a never-ending back-and-forth. Omar, though, said that she doesn’t “think of it that way.”
If we think about the Supreme Court, the number of justices is not given to us in the Constitution. There’s not a specific number. The court has been expanded seven times in our nation’s history. And, in this particular time, given the fact that we have overwhelming majority of the justices being appointed by presidents that did not reflect the will of the people, they didn’t win the popular vote, I think it’s really important for us to have justices that are a reflection of the American people and their opinions.
Holmes then asked Omar whether she is calling the Supreme Court an “illegitimate court.”
“There is a question to the legitimacy of it, and it’s an important discussion for us to have,” Omar replied.
Omar’s interview was part of a segment called “What can congress do to protect Roe v. Wade ahead of SCOTUS decision?”
This follows the recent leak of the court’s draft abortion decision in which it overturns Roe. That decision has yet to be made official – it is not even clear if this is how the justices will ultimately rule. But, the justices’ decision, in this case, is expected to come as early as next week.
The Democrats have been pushing hard to pack the Supreme Court ever since former President Donald Trump got the opportunity to appoint three justices to the court, giving the court a decidedly-conservative majority for the first time in decades. The Democrats want to increase the number of justices on the court in order to allow President Joe Biden to put at least four liberals on the bench, thereby giving the court, once again, a liberal majority.
A liberal Supreme Court majority is crucial for the Democrats. They have been using it for decades to get unpopular legislation enacted that they could not get enacted through the proper legislative channels.
Court-packing, though, remains unpopular among Americans, which is why many Democrats have abandoned such talk.
