Democrats and many in the mainstream media routinely expressed outrage over former President Donald Trump’s weekend excursions away from the White House on the taxpayer’s dime. But they’ve had little to say about his predecessor.
That’s despite the fact that, according to Fox News, Biden has taken a whopping 25 trips home to Delaware in just the first 43 weeks of his presidency — and those trips are estimated to have cost taxpayers more than $3 million in U.S. Secret Service travel and lodging expenses alone.
That figure is nowhere near the total cost of the visits, however, as it doesn’t account for Defense Department expenses for things like fuel or costs incurred by the use of Air Force One or Marine One. It also doesn’t factor in the costs of paying Biden’s staffers and other officials who join the president on those trips home.
“The costs of presidential travel”
The number shared by Fox News was first gleaned via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch with the U.S. Secret Service. Judicial Watch notes that it has yet to receive a response to a similar request filed with the Pentagon.
The request reportedly revealed at least $2.25 million in confirmed costs for the protective agency, including expenses for hotel rooms, car rentals, and the air or rail travel necessary to get from Washington to Biden’s home in Wilmington or his beach house in Rehoboth Beach.
But those figures are only for some of the 25 trips made thus far; a few of the more recent trips have yet to be officially tallied.
According to the New York Post, when those are factored in, the cost to taxpayers for Secret Service alone for these trips will be well in excess of $3 million.
“The costs of presidential travel and security is of obvious public interest,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement, according to the Post. “It is frustrating that after years of litigation through two presidential administrations, the Secret Service and Air Force are still stonewalling the costs of presidential travel.”
Few weekends at the White House
The Post also reported that of the 25 trips made to Delaware by Biden thus far, 22 of those have been to his Wilmington home. The other three were to his Rehoboth Beach residence on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean.
That means that more than half of the weekends that have elapsed in the 43 weeks since Biden took office have involved him traveling home to Delaware — not to mention the few mid-week trips he’s taken.
In addition to that, Biden has also reportedly spent 11 weekends at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, and he’s spent some weekends abroad, meaning just a handful have been spent actually working at the White House.
Notably, the Post cited a former staffer to former President George W. Bush — who often traveled to his ranch in Texas on the weekends — who explained that presidents are still fully capable of doing their jobs from outside of the White House, and Trump, as president, was no exception. But as the mainstream media remains silent about Biden’s excursions, it’s hard not to notice the hypocrisy.
