Eric Greitens leads the race to fill Sen. Blunt’s seat

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Republican Eric Greitens is leading the race for Sen. Roy Blunt’s (R-MO) U.S. Senate seat.

Blunt announced in 2021 that he would not be seeking reelection this year, which set off this race for his seat.

Currently, there are 21 Republicans, 11 Democrats, and two minor-party candidates who looking to fill that seat. That is how many candidates are signed up to participate in the primary that will be held in early August.

It is expected that a Republican will emerge victorious. And, now, according to the Dispatch, it is appearing more and more likely that Greitens could just win the whole thing.

Who is he?

For some, this will come as a surprise. That’s because, back in 2018, Greitens resigned the governorship of Missouri amid several allegations, including one that he took a charity fundraising list for political purposes.

Nonetheless, the polls indicate that Greitens is back.

The Dispatch reports:

Since the race began, various polls indicated Greitens has a solid base of about one-quarter of the GOP. A Fox 2/Emerson College/The Hill poll that reached 1,000 likely Republican primary voters between June 2 and June 5 found Greitens leading with 26% of voters. In sequence, he was trailed by state Attorney General Eric Schmitt, U.S. Reps. Vicky Hartzler and Billy Long, and personal injury attorney Mark McCloskey.

Polls, of course, are not the most reliable indicator of who is going to win a political race. But, this poll would at least suggest that Greitens is a serious contender.

The “why?”

As for what is attracting voters to Greitens, the answer is not immediately clear. But, the campaign he is running might have something to do with it.

Greitens is trying to align himself with former President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement. Recently, for example, Greitens put out a campaign ad that has caused a lot of controversy.

The Associated Press reports:

The 38-second campaign ad that dropped Monday shows Eric Greitens brandishing a shotgun. An armed tactical team breaks into a home and throws what appear to be flash-bang grenades. Greitens enters through the smoke and says: “Join the MAGA crew. Get a RINO hunting permit. There’s no bagging limit, no tagging limit and it doesn’t expire until we save our country.”

Greitens, though, has not received the endorsement of Trump. Trump has yet to endorse anyone in the race.
