Ellen DeGeneres is firing several top staffers after explosive allegations surfaced of a toxic workplace culture behind the scenes of her hit daytime talk show.
Among the complaints lodged against the comedian and other figures are allegations of racism, intimidation, and unjustified terminations.
“Open, safe, and inclusive work environment”
The revelations have come as a shock to many who have been drawn to her amiable on-air demeanor. As a result, reports show that heads are rolling as DeGeneres attempts to hold those around her accountable for their role in the environment.
Producer Ed Glavin, who was cited as the source of many complaints, will reportedly be forced out of his job. Two other executive producers might also be on their way out.
In a statement from the three producers, they told Buzzfeed that they had “strived to create an open, safe, and inclusive work environment” throughout their 20 years working for the show.
“We are truly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience,” they said. “It’s not who we are and not who we strive to be, and not the mission Ellen has for us.”
Additional reports indicate DeGeneres herself has been contemplating whether she should call it quits. The latest controversy is sure to add more fuel to that speculation.
“The only way to recover”
An insider said that she “feels she can’t go on and the only way to recover her personal brand from this is to shut down the show,” according to the Daily Mail.
“The truth is she knew what was going on, it’s her show,” the individual continued. “The buck stops with her. She can blame every executive under the sun – but Ellen is ultimately the one to blame.”
Clearing out some of the controversial staffers might be a step in the right direction, but her long-running show is beginning to show signs that the magic is over between her and a loyal audience.
Some television executives and producers have considered bringing in a new host, possibly replacing her with Neil Patrick Harris or Kevin Hart if the numbers do not improve.
While it is clear that DeGeneres is not the beloved figure she once was, it remains to be seen how long her show can limp along under the circumstances.
