Dr. Fauci has COVID-19 . . . again

Dr. Anthony Fauci revealed on Tuesday that he has once again tested positive for COVID-19, Breitbart News reports

Fauci, the Biden administration’s chief medical adviser and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), first tested positive about two weeks ago on June 15. This was despite the fact that he was fully vaccinated and had received two booster shots.

At the time, Fauci reported that he was “experiencing mild symptoms.” He went into isolation, working from home.

Fauci also began treatment using Paxlovid, Pfizer’s antiviral drug. This treatment was recommended by his doctors considering that Fauci’s age – 81 – puts him at an increased risk of developing coronavirus complications, again, even though he is vaccinated and boosted.

Negative, then Positive?

Recently, it appeared that Fauci’s treatment was going successfully. He tested negative for three straight days. On the fourth day, though, it was a different story.

“After I finished the five days of Paxlovid, I reverted to negative on an antigen test for three days in a row,” Fauci said. “And then on the fourth day, just to be absolutely certain, I tested myself again. I reverted back to positive.”

“It was sort of what people are referring to as a Paxlovid rebound,” Fauci added.

The Paxlovid rebound

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning about this “Paxlovid rebound” phenomenon, which the agency has described as “seemingly rare, but increasingly reported.”

ABC News explains:

The rebounding phenomenon, which is described as a recurrence of COVID-19 symptoms or the development of a new positive viral test after having tested negative, has been found to occur between two and eight days after initial recovery. A brief return of COVID-19 symptoms may be part of the “natural history” of the virus, officials wrote, and may occur in some people, regardless of treatment with Paxlovid or vaccination status.

Round 2

Not only did Fauci reveal that he has the coronavirus again. He revealed that his symptoms, the second time around, were “much worse than in the first go around.”

In response, Fauci has done a second five-day treatment of Paxlovid. He said on Tuesday that he feels “reasonably good,” adding, “I’m not complete[ly] without symptoms, but I certainly don’t feel acutely ill.”

Fauci’s bout with COVID certainly highlights the perplexing nature of treatments: vaccines that don’t prevent infection and drugs that could actually make you even sicker.
