Donald Trump warned Europe against relying on Putin for energy in 2018

Former President Donald Trump was proven right again and his opponents have gone from laughing at him to grappling with the reality that Trump warned would come.

During a speech to the United Nations in 2018, Trump warned European nations that are relying on foreign energy, especially Russian energy would come back to bite them. Trump specifically called out Germany for being reliant on Russian energy, and his warning prompted laughter from the German delegation.

The Germans are no longer laughing as Russia has leveraged European energy dependence to bankroll the invasion of Ukraine.

Trump was always right

The transcript from Trump’s speech to the U.N. four years ago is almost prophetic.

Trump told the U.N. General Assembly that “Reliance on a single foreign supplier can leave a nation vulnerable to extortion and intimidation. That is why we congratulate European states, such as Poland, for leading the construction of a Baltic pipeline so that nations are not dependent on Russia to meet their energy needs. Germany will become totally dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course.”

As Trump was warning of the impending crisis that dependence on Russia would create, the camera panned to the German delegation that could be seen openly laughing.

That speech to the U.N. General Assembly in 2018 wasn’t the only time Trump warned about the danger of a Europe dependent on Russian energy.

During a meeting with top NATO and German officials, Trump said “It’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia. Where, you’re supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia. So we’re supposed to protect you against Russia, but they’re paying billions of dollars to Russia, and I think that’s very inappropriate.”

Of course, “orange man bad” decided the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, and Germany continued to ignore Trump’s warnings. Now the world is grappling with Russian aggression, and nearly every major European power has its hands tied.

Germany doomed Ukraine

Germany’s decision to laugh off Trump’s warnings has effectively doomed Ukraine as now Europe has no real way of stopping Vladimir Putin’s aggression.

European nations were perfectly happy becoming dependent on Russia, knowing that Putin didn’t have their best interests in mind. Those who laughed at Trump’s warnings now must explain how they allowed the war to break out in Europe.

Ukraine can only hold out against the overwhelming forces being thrown at them for so long. If the world can avoid further war with Russia, some hard questions need to be asked of those people who declared Trump unfit to lead the free world.
