In a rant that went viral online, a Chicago 911 dispatcher called Mayor Lori Lightfoot “a disgrace” as he blamed her for the surge in crime in the city over the last two years, the New York Post reported.
Dispatcher Keith Thornton spoke on Fox News on Tuesday about the crime wave under Lightfoot, saying that her poor leadership and failure to back police have helped to turn Chicago into “a death zone.”
“The blood is on her hands,” Thornton said Tuesday on Fox & Friends, according to the Post. “It’s out of control, and the citizens of Chicago deserve to know that what’s being done behind closed doors or what’s being told to them, it’s all false,” he added.
What she’s done
Thornton complained that “things have just gone downwind from previous administrations” and said, “it is affecting every part of the community within Chicago, every part of the town.”
Lightfoot has indeed let police numbers decline over the last several years, and had even planned to cut $80 million from the police department budget as progressives pushed to defund the police, the Post noted.
Currently, the mayor is demanding that police officers be vaccinated against COVID-19 or face termination, even at a time when the ranks are already dangerously low. She also wants federal officials to come into the city and help the police, the Post reports, even though she is directly responsible for the lack of personnel.
“This mayor does not care”
The number of people shot in the city is up 9% so far this year, with 4,270 shooting victims as of Dec. 26, the Post reported. Last year on the same date, there had been 3,930 shootings.
“This mayor does not care about Chicago police officers, period,” Thornton said in his viral rant to Fox. “She doesn’t care about any first responders. She don’t care about the damn city.
“Doesn’t matter if you’re white, Black, Asian, Hispanic, other. Straight, gay. Democrat or Republican,” Thornton, who is Black, added, according to the Post. “She doesn’t even care about her city workers.”
Lightfoot remains silent
Thornton even addressed Lightfoot directly during his 28-minute rant.
“I pray you’re watching this because you’re a disgrace. And I’m tired of it, and your city is tired of it,” he told Fox, according to the Post. “Matter of fact, it’s not your city. The city of Chicago is tired of it.”
Lightfoot has not responded to his comments.
