If you only listened to what was coming out of the Biden administration, you might think that there is no crisis happening at America’s southern border.
The reality of the situation appears to be much different. According to The Washington Times, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now asking for volunteers from agencies within the department to help deal with the “overwhelming” surge of migrants at the border.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made the request in an email sent to all DHS employees on Monday, the Times reported.
“Today I activated the Volunteer Force to support Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as they face a surge in migration along the Southwest Border,” Mayorkas wrote.
“I also realize these are uncertain times and being away from home may be concerning,” he continued. “But today your colleagues need assistance carrying out their mission to help others, and DHS is going to support you while deployed.”
According to the Times, Mayorkas said in the email that he got the idea from former President Donald Trump’s administration. In 2019, the Trump administration employed the same strategy to deal with an immigration surge that was occurring at the time. In total, the CBP received assistance from some 900 DHS volunteers.
Rosemary Jenks, vice president at NumbersUSA, criticized Mayorkas’ response, saying, “It is astonishing that instead of actually trying to stop the surge, the secretary of Homeland Security is focused on bringing in volunteers under a Trump program to manage it,” according to the Times.
Biden’s own making
The Trump administration worked tirelessly to get the border under control and enacted a number of policies designed to discourage illegal crossings.
Trump inherited a difficult situation at the border from the Obama administration, which featured open border policies and lax enforcement of immigration law.
The success that Trump had in getting the border under control has already been largely undone by President Joe Biden, who, upon taking office, undid most of Trump’s immigration policies.
There are currently between 1,000 and 4,000 illegal southern border crossings occurring every day, the Washington Examiner reported.
White House spokesperson Vedant Patel revealed that a group of “senior members” from the Biden administration will soon be making a trip to the border at the president’s request to assess the situation, according to The Hill.
